Re-live Kamaru Usman’s first title defense ahead of UFC 251.

Kamaru Usman rides a 15-fight win streak into the second defense of his UFC welterweight championship against Gilbert Burns, which is set to take place on Fight Island July 11 as part of the promotion’s month-long stretch of events in Abu Dhabi.

To get prepared for the bout, re-live Usman’s first title defense against Colby Covington from UFC 245 as part of the UFC’s Free Fight series on YouTube.

The fight was a back and forth affair, with Usman and Covington trading punches and kicks. Eventually, Usman broke Covington’s jaw midway through the fight, stopping Covington with strikes near the end of the fifth round. Covington protested the stoppage, but to no avail. Usman remained the champion, putting his record to 2-0 in 2019 and 16-1 overall.

What happened to Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington after their bout?

Usman’s second title defense was nearly against Jorge Masvidal, who captured the BMF title against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 last November at Madison Square Garden. However, contract negotiations weren’t reached, and with Burns upsetting former No. 1 contender and ex-welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in May, Burns earned the title shot. Burns enters the bout on a six-fight win streak and would become the first Brazilian welterweight champion in UFC history if he is able to win. Burns has defeated the likes of Demian Maia, Gunnar Nelson, Alexey Kunchenko, Mike Davis, and Oliver Aubin-Mercier, to name a few.

Covington has not fought since the Usman defeat, and recently left American Top Team, owned by long-time trainer Dan Lambert. It is unclear when Covington will compete again, as he has only fought twice since capturing the interim welterweight title against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225. According to the current welterweight rankings, Covington is listed at No. 3 and sports a 10-2 UFC record, with a 15-2 record overall.
