Politico reporter Ryan Lizza asked White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Monday if President Donald Trump believes it is good that the South lost the Civil War, prompting her to label the question “absolutely absurd.”

“Does President Trump believe that it was a good thing that the South lost the Civil War?” he asked.

“Well, your first question is absolutely absurd.  He’s proud of the United States of America,” McEnany replied.

Lizza also asked if the president planned to ban the Confederate flag at his rallies, following NASCAR’s decision to do so earlier this month after the police killing of George Floyd on May 25.

“Second, with regard to our statues, Americans oppose tearing down our statues,” McEnany answered. “There is a Harvard/Harris poll released just last week that shows 60 percent of respondents said the statue should remain, and 71 percent said local governments should block groups from physically destroying the statues.  So he stands on the side of preserving our history.”

Trump has already signed an executive order that works to protect statues and federal monuments from vandalism:

I just had the privilege of signing a very strong Executive Order protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues – and combatting recent Criminal Violence. Long prison terms for these lawless acts against our Great Country!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 26, 2020

The exchange between Lizza and McEnany also mirrors one between former press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and White House reporter April Ryan, during which Ryan asked if the White House believed slavery was wrong.

“I play this scenario in my head more than I should because first of all, I think — and again I’m not trying to speak for him and I don’t know — but I truly think he just will never understand me or respect certain decisions and I think he’s just gonna hold onto anger with me,” the 35-year-old reality TV personality admitted on the “Scrubbing In With Becca Tilley and Tanya Rad” podcast on Wednesday, July 1. “That’s how I feel so I would be nervous because I would probably play nice and even though he hurt me so terribly and things I’ve never even talked about, I hold anger too, but I know if I saw him I wouldn’t be able to be like ‘Meh,’ that’s just not me.”

Bristowe added that she hopes Booth’s new puppy, Walter, is in tow when the exes eventually run into each other.

“That would be a good distraction and I just want to be like ‘Hey, this is obviously weird. I don’t know how to even act right now, this is super weird,” the “Off the Vine” podcast host said, noting she would express her condolences for Booth’s late dog Tucker. “I’m so sorry about Tucker and I’m so glad you have a new pup.’ Like that’s probably what I would try and say.”

Bristowe and Booth, 33, got engaged during the July 2015 finale of The Bachelorette. Three years later, speculation surfaced that they were on the outs, but the duo didn’t confirm their split until November 2018. The “If I’m Being Honest” songstress told Becca Tilley that she reached out to the personal trainer in April after his dog died, but he didn’t respond.

“Obviously, I was just devastated for him because that was just like his absolute best friend and I thought for sure he would’ve reached out to me to say either ‘Hey we’re putting him down,’ or ‘Hey I didn’t want you to have to find this out through Instagram’ or something, but I can’t hold that against him,” Bristowe said. “Everybody grieves so differently and I don’t think I would want to talk to anybody in the world if I lost one of my dogs cause I would just be so like not okay. But I did reach out to him and said like ‘I am so sorry, if you need to talk. I’m devastated. I can’t imagine how you feel.’ And nothing.”

She continued: “He didn’t write me back. He wrote my cleaning lady back saying ‘Thank you, he loved spending time with you’ and I’m like, ‘Ah! Cleaning lady? Come on now!’”

After her split from Booth, Bristowe started seeing Jason Tartick, who competed on season 14 of The Bachelorette in 2018.

“I didn’t realize how miserable I was or how out of touch I was with myself and my confidence until — and I’m not trying to, obviously, blame Shawn, but I felt a lot of shame from the show,” she said. “I felt a lot of insecurities. I didn’t feel safe in the relationship. … It’s three and a half years of feeling shame and like I don’t deserve love from him. And I knew that wasn’t right, [but] that’s constantly what I was feeling for three and a half years.”

Bristowe and Tartick, 31, confirmed their relationship in January 2019. The twosome moved into together in Nashville that May. The Dancing With the Stars season 29 contestant previously spoke to Us Weekly about her decision to stay in Music City after moving there for Booth.

“I’m still in the house. … I made it my own,” she told Us in May. “I don’t want to run into [him], you know, that’s how we all feel after a breakup. But again, I had to get over that because I was like, ‘No, I’ve built a life here too and I love it here and I’m not going to run away just because of certain little fears after a breakup.'”

From a reality TV engagement to a real-world romance, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Shawn Booth were once a beloved power couple.

The duo, who got engaged in 2015 on The Bachelorette season 11 finale, broke up in November 2018.

But while they were together, they didn’t shy away from discussing their long engagement and their reasons for not rushing down the aisle. They also previously fended off split rumors and have been open about not putting their relationship first at all times due to busy schedules.

Scroll down to revisit Bristowe and Booth’s most candid quotes about their romance and how they’re handling their breakup.

The pair are open to exchanging vows in a televised ceremony. “We’ve talked about it. It seems like it would be fun and everyone can come and be there and it would be a big event,” Bristowe told ET Canada in November 2015. “I think if we did that, we would probably have a little intimate wedding after.”

Bristowe revealed her decision to freeze her eggs on in March 2017. “I think a lot of women feel pressure to have kids, especially when you get engaged,” she explained to Good Morning America at the time. “And for me, I’m, like, I don’t want that pressure on myself. This is kind of a backup plan for us to feel comfortable. It’s kind of like insurance.”

The Canadian dancer knew Booth was the one from the first moment she met him. “I actually thought I knew night one and I just hoped from that moment on. I think I made the mistake of admitting it was him from night one [to producers],” she said on the Mouthing Off With Olivia Caridi podcast in July 2017. “I said right away, ‘Game over. It’s that guy, no questions.’”

The fitness guru and the Off the Vine podcast host were planning for parenthood months before splitting. “I know when we have kids, we want them to be as active as possible and get them away from any type of screen or phone,” Booth exclusively told Us Weekly in August 2017. “When I was a little kid, I was outside every single day running around like a madman, climbing everything and playing every sport you can think of. I definitely want my kids to do the same.”

Booth and Bristowe were happy taking things slow after their time on The Bachelorette. “We came off the show and into our engagement and have really just been taking things stride by stride,” he exclusively told Us in May 2018. “We have our own stride with how we want to take our relationship from the show out into the real world and it really has been an adjustment. But we’ve always been on the same page. We click like that. We’ve been normal and want to keep that normalcy.”

The former dance teacher and the personal trainer were once moving slow and steady and even thought about getting re-engaged. “I feel like we are going backwards [in wedding planning]! I feel like we’ve talked about him re-proposing because sometimes I don’t even want to wear a ring anymore ‘cause I want him to have it just so he can surprise me,” she exclusively told Us in June 2018. “Because we always talk about him proposing when I’m not expecting it, rather than when I’m on the show where I knew it was coming. So yeah, I’ve thought about giving the ring back to Shawn so that he could propose when the time comes, and then we can start wedding planning when we feel that it’s that time.”

Bristowe was spotted many times throughout the summer of 2018 sans her engagement ring, leading fans to believe that she and Booth had called it quits. However, the former bearer of red roses set the record straight.

“If you’ve ever been a person who is running a successful brand or business and a person who is doing the same but in a different career path, you know times can be tough,” she said during an August 2018 Off the Vine podcast episode. “You are both always away, you’re exhausted at the end of the day, sometimes the relationship isn’t being put first, but does that mean you call it quits? No. You love the s—t out of each other and you work through it — and yourselves to be better. And you know that times aren’t always going to be smooth sailing … You just have to get through those hurdles and enjoy the good times. Shawn and I are 110 percent committed to each other and yes, we are still together.”

Us Weekly confirmed in November 2018 that Booth and Bristowe ended their engagement.

Days after Bristowe and Booth called it quits, the former Bachelorette stepped out for a fun night with friends in Vancouver, taking to social media to document the outing. When a commenter claimed she had a drinking problem and added that people think she didn’t deserve Booth, she hit back. “Fun fact. My mom used to get told she had a drinking problem because she had a big personality. F–k off,” Bristowe wrote. “Ps what?”

Bristowe posted a sweet selfie cuddling her ex’s pup less than two weeks after their breakup. She captioned the heartbreaking photo with a black heart emoji.

Booth spoke out in an emotional Instagram post less than two weeks after news of their split in 2018. “I just want to thank everyone who has been so supportive of my relationship with Kaitlyn over the years,” he wrote. “You’ve made me feel incredibly special, supported, and very loved. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you. It truly means a lot. And thank you to everyone who has sent their love & support during this painful time. I love you guys.”

The Dew designer got emotional as she opened up about the split on the November 20, 2018, episode of her “Off the Vine” podcast. Bristowe revealed that it took her awhile to “accept” their breakup, and noted that there were “important fundamental values that weren’t lining up” between the two. However, the former reality star added that she and Booth will “remain friends.”

The personal trainer admitted that he was struggling with the loss of his relationship — and his closest pal — while appearing on the “Almost Famous: In Depth” podcast in January 2019. “Not only were we engaged, but it’s like, ‘Man, I lost my best friend too. … It just feels like everything is completely gone — like, Kaitlyn and Shawn gone, everything we’ve had, everything we’ve been through. You know, we were this team and we got through a lot of stuff together, but then just, like, in an instant it’s all gone.”

Booth said that seeing his ex move on with Bachelorette alum Jason Tartick, who competed for the affection of Becca Kufrin on season 14 of the show, has helped him to do the same. “[I’m] trying to understand things right now. I guess this goes with her new relationship too. It just kind of makes me question everything that we’ve had,” he told Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti on their podcast “Almost Famous: In Depth” in January 2019. “It seems like she’s moved on and she’s happy. … I also think that it’s helping me to move on because it does hurt that much, but seeing everything, it does upset me and does make me a little angry, but it also helps me to move on knowing that maybe we weren’t right for each other and that I will find somebody down the road that will also make me happy.”

Bristowe opened up her relationship status with Booth more than a year after their split in May 2019. “If I ran into him on the street I would say, ‘Hey, how’s it going?’ It’s not like there’s any hate there, but … we don’t talk or anything,” the Dew Edit scrunchies designer told Us at the time.

The “Off the Vine” podcast host set the record straight on her negative comments about the Bachelor franchise, in which she said she had “bitter feelings” toward one person in Bachelor Nation, in January 2020, noting that they had nothing to do with her ex. “Let’s be honest, everyone is going to immediately think, ‘Oh, she’s talking about her ex,’ but no. I could be petty, but not that petty,” Bristowe told Us exclusively at the time. “I would just say it if that’s who I was talking about. It’s someone who I would just rather not say the name anymore and just move forward, because there’s so many people I love in that franchise.”

After Booth announced that his dog Tucker had died in April 2020, Bristowe was quick to send him some love and support. “I’m so sorry,” she wrote via Instagram. “This one hurts. You gave him a great life.”

While watching The Bachelor: Greatest Seasons Ever! In June 2020, Bristowe revealed that she hasn’t kept in touch with her ex recently. During an Instagram Stories Q&A, the Canada native confirmed that she didn’t speak with Booth ahead of The Bachelorette re-airing. Booth, for his part, didn’t appear to do any interviews ahead of the season’s revival and his proposal to Bristowe didn’t air.
