Footage of the party emerged after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said Leicester had a staggering "10 per cent of all positive cases in the country over the past week".

The Highfields area of the city is believed to be the centre of the spike in cases of deadly COVID-19.

A furious resident, who didn’t want to be named, told The Sun: “There were hundreds of young people on Oxendon Walk dancing and singing until late. Someone had even brought a sound system and speakers - the music was so loud.

“And it isn’t the first party in Highfields. People haven’t taken lockdown seriously at all around here so I’m not surprised there have been so many cases of the virus.

“The day after the party the street was littered with hippy crack canisters. My mum even tried to start clearing them up because she didn’t know what they were. It’s a disgrace.”

Another local, Fiona Gales, said: “There have been street parties all over the city for weeks - people don’t give a s**t.”

Councillor Rashmikant Joshi told the MailOnline his North Evington ward has the highest number of new cases in the city - and is near to where the large bash was held.

Councillor Joshi said: 'We have a lot of inter-generational households, where young people live with their grandparents.

"South Asians also tend to live in larger family groups, which increases the risk of infection.

"Since the easing of the lockdown, a lot of youngsters have been going out more and not maintaining social distance.

"There's a high chance that they came home and passed on the virus to elderly relatives."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said yesterday Leicester would be the only place in England not allowed to ease restrictions after a spike - but warned the lockdown measures could be brought back in for other rising hotspots.

A number of northern towns and their infection rates are worrying experts, with The Times reporting health officials have warned Leicester is a "tinderbox" for a rise in cases.

A lot of youngsters have been going out more and not maintaining social distance.

Rates of infection in the city are now three times that of the town with the next highest rate.

And as cases fail to drop in line with the rest of the country, 10 per cent of tests are currently coming back positive - five times the national rate.

Non-essential shops in the city shut today in a local lockdown, and schools will close for most pupils from Thursday - taking it back to the more severe restrictions of May.

Footage of Saturday’s ‘block party’ shows the revellers gathered in the street late on Saturday evening, brazenly drinking, smoking and listening to music.

They were loudly singing along to the DJ, who had set up decks and speakers, with some even breaking into football chants shouting “Jamie Vardy’s having a party.”

The videos have been circulated with the caption "Leicester block party".

Last week, "invitations" to the party were shared on Facebook and Snapchat, saying the location would be messaged to people on Saturday afternoon. It was billed as a “street party like never before”.

A number of residents blasted the party goers on social media.

Ajay Bhakta wrote: “Everyone who was at the Block Party last night in Highfields. You are a f***ing moron. Over 200 people and lots of hippy gas canisters left on the street.”

‘Sarah’ fumed: “A spike in cases and idiots are partying on the street behind my house. Even my children are rolling their eyes.”

Neighbours also expressed their anger towards the local police, who "did nothing".

Another local said: "The police were called and they came to the street but did nothing - I was really shocked.

Up to 80 percent of community fireworks displays in large cities and small rural towns were reportedly canceled this year over fear that they would create a social distancing nightmare.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health imposed a ban on public fireworks shows, citing increased coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

But video taken from a news helicopter shows the L.A lit with color across the city the ban appeared to be more respect in its flouting.

One video taken on the ground shows just how many fireworks were set of, with one explosion after another lighting up the night.

The city Lancaster, in L.A County, went ahead with an event, with city Mayor Rex Parris saying it would prevent larger uncontrolled gatherings.

This year residents were encouraged to wear their masks and practice physical distancing.

“If we don’t do this, what are people going to do, they’re going to throw parties, they’re going to celebrate on their own, this gives them a distraction that keeps them in the family unit without spreading this disease,” Parris told CBS Los Angeles.

3 The ban appeared to have little effect

HOLY COW! Is anyone in Los Angeles seeing how many people are shooting off fireworks??? Hundreds are being launched in all directions. Looking at this video, you’d never know these types of fireworks are completely ILLEGAL in LA County...
