Florida Governor signs controversial law requiring EVerify to be used E-Verify allows to check a worker’s immigration status The tool is used before hiring a new employee

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the law Tuesday that will require all state entities and some private companies to use an electronic system known as E-Verify to check a worker’s immigration status before hiring him.

Republican DeSantis signed the law in his office in the company of his promoters, Republican state legislators Tom Lee and Cord Byrd, senator and representative, respectively.

“This new law is yet another DeSantis attack on immigrant families in Florida that comes a year after the infamous SB 168 ‘Show Me Your Papers,'” Thomas Kennedy, Florida state coordinator for the immigrant organization United, said in a statement. We Dream.

The Florida Senate had approved the bill in early March to compel companies to verify that their employees are not undocumented and that it also allows the state to randomly audit companies that choose not to use the federal program known as E-Verify.

Bill SB 664, today signed into law, found the support of 22 senators and the rejection of 18.

SB 664 requires companies to use E-Verify or keep a three-year record of the documents used by job applicants when completing an eligibility form.

The move was a campaign promise from Governor DeSantis, which is aligned with President Donald Trump’s strong immigration policies.

In addition to pro-immigrant organizations, sectors that move the economy in the tourist “Estado del Sol” are opposed to E-Verify.

A study published in February indicated that E-Verify could cut business profits by $ 10.66 billion and state and local tax revenues by $ 1.25 billion.

According to activist Kennedy, “Governor Ron DeSantis continues to do the dirty work of (Donald) Trump in Florida with the signing of the E-Verify law.”

“This is nothing but bait for Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant base. Rather than focus on the more than 150,000 people in Florida who have tested positive for COVID-19, DeSantis wants to make life more difficult for immigrants in Florida, ”he added.

United We Dream lamented that “this law will limit the ability of thousands of Floridians to earn a living to support themselves and their families.”

The organization strongly condemned this DeSantis action and promised “to continue fighting for the permanent protection of all immigrants” and “to dismantle the detention and deportation machine, which disproportionately impacts people of color.”

The Florida governor had launched the petition to Floridian lawmakers in November 2019, to approve in 2020 regulations that require employers to verify through an online system – known as E-Verify – the immigration status of people before giving them job.

Florida Gov. DeSantis hampering fundraising efforts for GOP convention: Report

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may be intentionally hindering the GOP's efforts to raise funds for August's Republican National Convention in the state.

The New York Times reported Thursday that DeSantis has directed his top fundraiser, Heather Barker, to tell donors not to make contributions to the forthcoming convention in Jacksonville. DeSantis has allegedly done so because of a personal dispute between him and his former campaign manager Susie Wiles.

Wiles, an experienced Republican operative, ran DeSantis's 2018 campaign for governor. She also led President Trump's Florida team in 2016 and was brought back to assist his 2020 campaign. In September, Wiles was accused of leaking an internal memo from DeSantis's political action committee, which suggested he was selling special access to lobbyists. DeSantis reportedly had a hand in her ouster from the Trump campaign following the controversy.

Wiles rejoined the president's reelection campaign as an unpaid adviser last week amid mounting concerns about how Trump will perform in Florida this November. She has been informally assisting the convention planners.

According to the New York Times, Barker has been clear with donors that DeSantis is not helping the fundraising efforts because of Wiles's involvement. Barker, however, flatly denied the allegations.

“We are encouraging all people to participate, and we hope it’s a success for the president,” she said. "We just hope everything is a success and want it to be, however they want to structure things and put things together."

Those involved in the fundraising process indicated that most of those contributing to the convention are national donors, rather than Florida donors, and that DeSantis's lack of assistance hasn't had a major impact on raising money.
