In Republican circles – with the notable exception of the man leading the party – the debate over face masks is over: Time to put one on.

In the face of a wave of infections in the southern and western United States, Republican authorities are fighting the idea that face masks are a political issue, as President Donald Trump advocates, and they tell Americans that they can help save lives.

Senator Lamar Alexander, a Republican from Tennessee, directly asked Trump on Tuesday to start wearing a face mask, at least sometimes, to set a good example.

“Unfortunately, this simple, life-saving practice has become part of a political debate that says: If you support Trump, you are not wearing a mask. If you are against Trump, you take it, ”said Alexander.

It is an unusual breakup between Republicans and Trump, who this month told the Wall Street Journal that some people wear face masks just to show that they are against them. And the messages for the population – and the president – to start wearing a mask come from all corners of the Trump party, and even from related conservative media.

Both Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have begun in recent days urging Americans to wear one when they cannot maintain social distance. Senator Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah, told reporters that it would be “very helpful” if Trump defended its use.

Put on a mask, it’s not complicated, McConnell, R-Kentucky, told Americans on Tuesday during his weekly press conference.

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming last week tweeted a photo of her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, wearing a face mask and cowboy hat. She accompanied the image with the text “Dick Cheney WEARS A MASK #loshombresdeverdadvanmasillas”, a label that alluded to previous words of the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

Steve Doocy, co-host of a Trump-like morning show, “Fox & Friends,” said during an interview with minority leader in the lower house, Kevin McCarthy, that “I don’t see any problem with the president being seen leading more to often”.

McCarthy, Republican of California, responded that for the upcoming holiday, “we could all show our patriotism with a red, white, and blue mask.”

The Trump team has defended the president’s refusal to wear a mask, indicating that the president and his collaborators are regularly tested for coronaviruses. White House visitors and journalists who have close contact with Trump and Pence are also tested.

But even with those measures, the virus has reached the White House. A top Pence aide and a Trump military aide tested positive in May.

Polls show that differences by party on this issue are reflected in public opinion.

The overwhelming majority of Democrats believe that people in their community should wear a mask when they are around other people in public spaces at least most of the time, and 63% said they should always wear it, according to a Pew Research Center survey. published in early June. Among Republicans, 29% said that masks should always be worn and 23% that most of the time. Another 23% said they should be worn rarely or never.

Trump has been photographed once with a mask. Pence and other members of the White House team tasked with managing the virus often appear in public with a mask.

“If you want college football to come back this year, cover your face. If you want a chance for graduation parties next spring, cover your face, ”said US Director of Public Health Jerome Adams.

During the crisis, the government has given conflicting messages about the masks.

Lawrence Gostin, a public health expert at Georgetown University, said he fears that the Republicans’ call for facemasks “may come too late.”

“The population has received many conflicting messages from the government,” said Gostin. “I fear that we will not be able to rid ourselves of the coronavirus until the American population is razed and hundreds of thousands of people are killed.
