CHICAGO (CBS) — The annual Chicago fireworks show at Navy Pier was canceled this July 4th, but several suburban communities went forward with their displays.

Bolingbrook hosted a drive-in fireworks show Saturday night. The fireworks there could be seen by those camped out near the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Organizers said they also raised the height of the fireworks for better viewing around the area.

The Navy Pier fireworks were canceled due to concerns about crowds amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

But other virtual events did go ahead. They included a virtual Independence Day salute concert and at-home salsa dance parties.

Also held Saturday was a virtual version of the Chosen Few Picnic and Festival. The house music celebration went virtual with DJs streaming their sets on YouTube from noon until 9 p.m.

A reveller has died and two are fighting for life after gunfire broke out at a Beverly Crest mansion party held in honor of an NFL star

One reveler has died and two others are in critical condition after a shooting at a Beverly Hills mansion which insiders say was thrown for an NFL star.

The Los Angeles Fire Department earlier said that one casualty was in 'grave condition' and two others were 'critical' after a burst of gunfire at the Mulholland Drive property at around 12.45am.

One of those victims was later confirmed to have died in hospital.

A security guard working at the lavish party said it was thrown for an NFL player, without confirming who.

Footage from earlier last night showed hundreds of people packed across the stunning balconies of the villa as one reveler appeared to 'make it rain' - throwing dollar bills into the air, which showered into the pool below.

Later video showed chaos breaking out with party-goers rushing for cover and hiding inside cars after several shots were fired.

The Instagram post said: 'Big Hollywood Hills mansion party off Mulholland Drive shots fired people shot a lot of big ballers were gambling lost a lot of money we're (sic) p***ed then a bunch of gangsters came in and robbed everybody and started shooting everybody.

'A lot of people with money and guns and gangsters got crazy I ran for my life it was crazy.'

He filmed himself running away from the party and is heard saying: 'Oh my God, somebody got shot right there. I'm out of here.'

In a statement the fire department said: 'Two patients are in critical condition and one patient is in grave condition. All three have been transported to area hospitals from the scene.'

One of the victims was a man in his 30s and another a woman in her 40s, CBS reported.

A fourth person also sustained a wrist injury while running away, LAFD said.

There were two rounds of gunfire, according to the broadcaster, the first of which involved around 20 shots and then another volley of several shots a short time later.

Earlier in the night the Los Angeles Police Department had arrived to the rented property following numerous noise complaints but the police said that they could not enter without a warrant.

Officers said they were on the scene for traffic and noise control from 6.30pm and estimated around 200 people were attending the party.

To prevent the spread of coronavirus, LA County has a ban on 'parties of any size.'

Very few of those attending appeared to be observing social distancing nor were they wearing face masks as they danced and frolicked in the pool.

Kennie D. Leggett, security manager for the event at the rented mansion, had earlier told CBS: 'We have money. We are people. This COVID, I mean, is just pushing us out everywhere, and we have nothing, so the only thing we do have is Airbnbs to rent swimming pools for our kids, to do big things and things of that nature.'

Leggett told CBS that his team planned on staying until 3am when the party was scheduled to end.

The broadcaster said it had contacted the management company for the property who said that they had not been made aware of plans for any party and that it was in violation of the rental terms.

It is unclear if anyone has been arrested.
