Facebook Fact Checks But Does Not Remove Another Video Manipulated To Make Pelosi Appear Drunk

Facebook applied a “partly false” label Sunday to another slowed-down video that makes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appear drunk.

The video, which began circulating Thursday, had 2 million views by Sunday, according to a CNN report on Facebook’s fact check. With the label, the video will be promoted less on the platform, but it has not been removed, CNN noted.

The doctored video was from a press conference Pelosi gave in May in which she criticized President Donald Trump for making false accusations against MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. Facebook independent fact-checker Lead Stories was responsible for the fact check.

“Following an incident over a year ago with a previous video of Speaker Pelosi, we took a number of key steps, making it very clear to people on Facebook when a third-party fact-checker determines content to be false and updating our policy to make explicit the kind of manipulated media we will remove,” Facebook spokesman Andy Stone told CNN.

This is unbelievable, she is blowed out of her mind, I bet this gets taken down!

Stone was referring to an 2019 incident where Pelosi pointed out a Facebook video that the House speaker believed was manipulated video meant to make her look bad. She and liberal pundits pounced on the company in 2019 when the tech giant refused to remove the doctored video clip.

The 2019 video, much like the content Facebook fact checked Sunday, artificially slowed Pelosi’s speech and mannerisms. It was identified as a fake, but not before it had been shared across multiple platforms. Facebook determined at the time that providing customers with accurate information was more important than removing the video entirely.

“And, as always, when a video is determined false, its distribution is dramatically reduced and people who see it, try to share it, or have already shared it, see warnings alerting them that it’s false,” Stone said of the video Facebook labeled false Sunday. Stone told CNN that the video did not break Facebook’s policies in a way requiring the content to be removed.

Facebook’s policies governing manipulated content state that videos will be removed if they have “been edited or synthesized – beyond adjustments for clarity or quality – in ways that aren’t apparent to an average person and would likely mislead someone into thinking that a subject of the video said words that they did not actually say.”

Such content is also nixed if artificial intelligence was used to make a fake video appear authentic, according to the policy.

The video Facebook flagged Sunday had been substantially edited and slowed down, according to Hany Farid, a visual forensic expert and professor at the University of California Berkeley who reviewed the content Sunday. “This appears to be the same type of manipulation (of) the Speaker Pelosi that made the rounds last year,” Farid told CNN.

Facebook directed the Daily Caller News Foundation to Stone’s previous comment about the video, and Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
