The first trailer of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl dropped on YouTube today. The movie skipped a theatrical release amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It was acquired by Netflix and will now launch on the streamer on August 12, three days before India’s Independence Day. Janhvi Kapoor stars as Gunjan, the first female IAF pilot to fly into the war zone, during the Kargil war.

The first footage of the film displays the parity between genders in the army. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl trailer has been praised by Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl Trailer Out Now, Janhvi Kapoor Shines Bright In This Biopic That Will Invoke Patriotism In You (Watch Video).

Few women officers had filed a plea in court over inequality. In February 2020, the centre had responded: “The composition of rank and file being male, and predominantly drawn from rural background, with prevailing societal norms, the troops are not yet mentally schooled to accept women officers in command,”

Supreme Court ordered equal roles for women in the Indian army calling centre’s response ‘disturbing’. “To cast aspersion on their abilities on the ground of gender is an affront not only to their dignity as women but to the dignity of the members of the Indian Army,” judges said in their ruling.

In January 2019, Chief of the Army Staff Gen Bipin Rawat said that the Indian army was conservative and there was no space for the LGBT community. “For LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues, in the Army these are not acceptable,” he said in press con.

In July 2020, Indian Army announced that Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are open to recruiting transgenders to the Officer Cadre Posts of Assistant Commandments.

It is a long way to go for the Indian army. Let us hope, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is able to change things.
