Michigan has ordered coronavirus testing of agricultural and food processing workers after nearly a dozen outbreaks at farms and slaughterhouses in recent weeks. Under the emergency order, meat, poultry, and egg facilities––as well as greenhouses and employers that hire migrant workers who don’t live on-site––will all have to test current and new employees for the virus. Slaughterhouses have become hotbeds for coronavirus, and meat companies had to temporarily shut down. In the meat processing plants that remain open, companies have failed to provide adequate protective gear or enforce social distancing rules, leading to another surge in cases. According to a ProPublica review, more than 33,000 coronavirus cases have been tied to meat and poultry industry, and at least 132 meatpacking workers have...

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on August 7 that all schools in the state of New York were cleared to open in the fall.  Schools closed in March and stayed closed through the end of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the state was a virus hotspot in the early days of the pandemic, the state has lowered infection and case rates to meet the standards for schools to open. “Today is the deadline to look at the infection rates and make a determination. By our infection rates, all school districts can open everywhere in the state,” Cuomo said in a news conference. “Every region is below the threshold that we established.” Each district was required to submit reopening...
While all of the omegas offer health benefits, as well as drawbacks, omega-3 fatty acids have received most of the attention lately. Why are omega-3 fatty acids important? Studies have illuminated an incredibly important connection between omega-3 fatty acids and overall health, specifically their effects on reducing chronic inflammation. A variety of “clinical trials have also shown beneficial anti-inflammatory effects in patients taking omega-3 supplements.” With that said, there are a few different forms of omega-3 fatty acids and only one of them can be sourced fully from plant-based foods called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The ALA form of omega-3 fatty acids doesn’t have that same powerful inflammation-alleviating effect as the other two forms. Of course, plant-based eaters are not...

It’s been almost seven years and I still find it fascinating how much I ended up missing eggs when I became vegan. I thought it was chicken I couldn’t live without but eggs were the last food I gave up. The reason I find it fascinating is that had anyone asked me, I would have said I didn’t really like eggs that much. There were only two ways I ate them that I loved – scrambled and in omelets – so I really didn’t think it would be that big a deal. Yet it was. It was the one food I really struggled with but eventually, my conscience would no longer allow me to have eggs in my life. When...

Dr. Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases talked on August 3 about schools reopening and concerns many have about opening schools during the pandemic. Fauci stressed the need for caution and safety but emphasized that schools and college campuses around the United States should reopen in the fall. “The primary consideration should always be the safety, the health of the welfare of the children, as well as the teachers and the secondary effects for spreading (to) the parents and other family members,” he said. For colleges, testing is key to reopening, according to Fauci. Students that arrive back on campus should be tested and then quarantined...
According to John Hopkins University, 70 million Americans have digestion problems of some sort. Common digestive disorders include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and ulcerative colitis, but other (more serious) conditions can also occur including colorectal cancer or a perforated ulcer – both of which can be life-threatening. Digestive Benefits of a Plant-Based Diet Going plant-based comes with so many benefits, one of the best being digestion. A plant-based diet has been found to improve IBS (especially for those with lactose intolerance), along with GERD, which is aggravated by a diet heavy in fats, or an overly acidic diet. Colon cancer has also been linked to a diet that includes animal foods. Animal foods aren’t only acidic to...

You may have noticed that a new supplement has been popping up around the healthcare world called astaxanthin. While the name has that prescription-drug feel to it, this supplement is anything but chemically derived. In fact, astaxanthin is a 100 percent natural potent antioxidant! What gives shrimp, krill, and flamingos that pinkish hue? That’s astaxanthin! Just like carotenoids — think carrots and bell peppers — astaxanthin is found in the bright reddish-pink color of sealife creatures and microalgae. Even though we may just be picking up on astaxanthin, this antioxidant is definitely not new to the research scene. Studies have been conducted from every angle of this antioxidant and the findings show that astaxanthin is an incredibly powerful agent...

While humans are encouraged to wear masks to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, experts are warning those with pets to leave their animals without a mask. Instead of protecting from the coronavirus, the mask could kill the animal. Experts are speaking out after a new trend that shows pet owners putting masks on their animals. Dr. Melissa Meehan, a veterinarian in Australia, said masks can stress animals out and in the worst case scenario, a mask could kill them. The veterinarian told Yahoo News, “As a vet I am constantly treating dogs and cats that suffer from stress and anxiety, which impacts on their health and mental wellbeing and also causing behavioural issues. Putting a mask on a dog...

The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged in July that the coronavirus is airborne and can be carried by tiny aerosols. Our talking and breathing release droplets and particles that can carry the virus into the air. Many scientists had been asking the WHO to reconsider their position and acknowledge that the virus is airborne. This data confirms that keeping a six-foot distance and wearing masks are important protective measures, but it also leads to a discussion on indoor air quality, opening windows, and improving airflow to help stop the spread of the virus. Aerosols and transmission are important to keep in mind in restaurants and other similar scenarios. Linsey Marr, an aerosol expert at Virginia Tech, said in an...
Two studies from Germany found that patients that recover from the coronavirus may have lingering heart issues. Even for patients that are not hospitalized, the effects of the virus can remain. In one study, out of 100 patients that received heart imaging after recovering from the coronavirus. 60 had signs of inflammation and 78 patients showed structural heart damage. The average age of the patients in the study was 49. Valentina Puntmann, who led the MRI study, said the patients studied were young and relatively healthy. “The fact that 78% of ‘recovered’ [patients] had evidence of ongoing heart involvement means that the heart is involved in a majority of patients, even if Covid-19 illness does not scream out with...

Red onions have been linked to the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 400 people in the U.S. and another 114 people in Canada, according to health officials. The outbreak has occurred in 34 states, but Oregon, Utah, and California have reported the most cases. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified Thomson International, a produce supplier in Bakersfield, California, as the likely source of contaminated red onions. Health officials recommend that consumers throw away any onions or foods made with onions supplied by Thomson, and the company will recall red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. The Salmonella outbreak was first reported in mid-June and continued through July, putting at...

Most of the country is about five months into shelter-in-place lockdown and the toll is beginning to show both physically and mentally. While the lack of social interactions and the closing of the economy are all huge hits to our psyche, one of the harshest realities is the drastically reduced access to our normal outlets. Most restaurants are closed to indoor dining. Many cities have closed parks, beaches, and even hiking trails. Travel is limited. And there are a great many of us that still find ourselves working from home. These factors all add up to a loaded, fatigued, and frayed mental psyche, which has resulted in an uptick in complaints and cases of trouble sleeping and even...
With all the buzz around the coronavirus vaccine, who decides who gets the treatment first? Over 160 vaccine candidates are currently in development around the world. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is currently working out who will have access to the vaccine when it is released. Researchers are hoping to have the vaccine available by the end of the year. Per the New York Times, the CDC is working on a ranking system that would include crucial security and medical professionals first, followed by essential workers and those at higher risk for the disease. With this plan, elderly citizens would get the vaccine before children, those with underlying conditions would ahead of those without those conditions. The scheduling...

The agency warned a Mexican company about selling products that include methanol in their ingredient list. Methanol can poison people through the skin. With hand sanitizer in high demand due to the coronavirus pandemic, other companies are stepping in to fill a gap and sell hand sanitizers and related products. The government is warning people to pay attention to labels and avoid using products with methanol, which could be potentially deadly. “Manufacturers’ failure to immediately recall all potentially affected products is placing consumers in danger of methanol poisoning,” the FDA said in a statement. “A warning letter has been issued to Eskbiochem S.A. de C.V. for distributing...

July was a big month for the plant-based meat industry. Since the start of the pandemic, plant-based meat sales have been skyrocketing––while overall spending dropped, plant-based meat sales jumped 264% according to Nielsen. The surge is likely due COVID-19 disruptions in the conventional meat industry and the growing awareness about the link between meat and disease. Major meat companies have had to shut down production as many of their employees got infected with the virus. In contrast, the plant-based meat industry has been less vulnerable to staffing shortages and can more easily manipulate its supply chain. “Unlike many companies, our technology can be dropped into any factory and can scale because we don’t have a lot of [the problems]...
One study has suggested that the pandemic has led to an increase in “broken heart syndrome.” The study found that at two Ohio hospitals some patients without coronavirus were experiencing symptoms of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, or “broken heart syndrome.” This suggests that patients are experiencing the emotional and physical toll of the pandemic, as many cases of the syndrome are caused by stress. Also called Takotsubo syndrome, this condition occurs when the heart muscles weaken, which leads to chest pain and shortness of breath. Higher Steaks, a UK-based startup, has produced the first samples of cultivated (cell-based) bacon and pork belly. The pork belly is approximately 50 percent cultivated meat to 50 percent plant-based while the bacon is around 70 percent cultivated meat to 30 percent plant-based. The other ingredients include mixture of plant proteins, fats, and starches to bind to the cellular structure, giving the products the classic pork taste and texture. Cultivated meat (also known as cell-based, cultured, or lab-grown meat) is meat grown outside the animal using a sample of animals cells. Companies claim cultivated meat can provide animal-based meat without the environmental and ethical harms of the animal agriculture industry. Fiocchi of America, the United States subsidiary of the Italian-based Fiocchi Group, announced that it will hire 57 additional workers for its new manufacturing plant in southwest Little Rock. The company already employs 28 people at the plant, which manufactures some ammunition components. The new plant will primarily manufacture centerfire ammunition, Fiocchi President Anthony Acitelli said. “These are good-paying jobs that will make a difference in our community, and most importantly, I hope that this is a partnership that will lead to future growth down the road," Gov. Asa Hutchinson said at a news conference announcing the plant. The Arkansas...
On Monday, July 27th, protestors were arrested after chaining themselves to California Governor Newsom’s home, calling for inmate releases and an end to immigration transfers from state prisons to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. The California Highway Patrol charged 14 protesters with trespassing and failure to leave, unlawful assembly, and failure to disperse after a warning. The protest comes as the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths in the state prisons has risen. The San Quentin State Prison has 537 cases of the virus that are currently active and over 2,600 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic. In early July, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced a plan to release up...

Fighting chronic inflammation is one of the leading health concerns that’s triggered widespread study, research, and the onslaught of inflammation-fighting products. Chronic inflammation takes place “when [the natural inflammatory response] lingers, leaving your body in a constant state of alert.” Recent research has found that “chronic inflammation may have a negative impact on your tissues and organs” and may even “play a role in a range of conditions, from cancer to asthma.” While a plant-based diet helps to fight chronic inflammation via antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and loads of vitamins and minerals, studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, could be a key nutrient in the battle! Omega-3 fatty acids are part of an entire “family of essential...

Meatpacking workers in Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for failing to protect essential workers from COVID-19. The lawsuit accuses OSHA of leaving workers in dangerous conditions that could expose them to the coronavirus. The complaint asserts that the factory, run by Maid-Rite Specialty Foods, did not supply adequate protective gear nor impose social distancing. It also claimed the factory failed to separate sick employees and tell other employees about infections; instead, the company allegedly offered bonuses to workers for coming to work, even while sick. The lawsuit calls out OSHA for not adequately responding to the complaints, and it hopes to compel the agency to better protect workers amidst the coronavirus pandemic....
Starting Monday, July 27th, Impossible Burgers will be available at all Trader Joe’s stores across the U.S. At the start of 2020, only 150 stores in the country had Impossible Burgers. Now, that number has risen to 5,000 stores as Impossible Foods has partnered with Kroger, Wegmans, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, and Safeway to sell their products. The addition of Trader Joe’s is critical to the company’s plans to expand into the retail sector. “We plan to expand our retail presence 50X in 2020 alone and to make the Impossible Burger accessible wherever Americans go grocery shopping,” Impossible Foods’ president, Dennis Woodside, said. “We’re particularly excited about the launch of Impossible at Trader Joe’s, a beloved institution with die-hard fans...

On Monday, the Senate Republicans released their proposal for the next stimulus bill, titled the HEALS Act. Key parts of the CARES Act, the first coronavirus relief package passed in March, are set to expire by the end of this month. Congress has been scrambling to develop a new stimulus package to boost the economy and help essential workers as the coronavirus pandemic continues. The House passed the HEROES Act back in May to help front-line workers, which would cost $3 trillion. The Senate Republicans were not satisfied with its price tag; instead, their proposal is estimated to cost around $1 trillion. Parts of the GOP proposed bill are similar to the CARES Act while others will likely lead...
The 10 largest retailers in the United States and many of the top 40 retailers have added a requirement that customers must wear masks to enter their stores. This guidance is based on that from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who has said that face coverings help stop the spread of the coronavirus. While the policy is posted, some retailers are finding it difficult to enforce. Walmart, who also owns Sam’s Club and is the nation’s largest retailer,  introduced a mask mandate on July 15. According to their website, the mask requirement is “a simple step everyone can take for their safety and the safety of others in our facilities.” So which retailers require masks to enter? These...

We could probably spend most of the day going back and forth about all the essential and vital vitamins necessary for a well-balanced, healthy diet. Yet, one nutrient that generally doesn’t require any convincing is vitamin C! Vitamin C — also called ascorbic acid — is a powerful and wonderful ally for the body, specifically when it comes to promoting healing, boosting the immune system, and fighting chronic diseases. This may be in part due to the fact that vitamin C actually works as an antioxidant, — this is especially important for boosting immune system function and fighting chronic disease — yet it also plays a huge role in helping your body to “form blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and collagen in bones,” is...

A new study has found that eating high-quality carbohydrates like whole grains is linked with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Scientists from the Netherlands and Boston analyzed three existing studies, each with over 40,000 participants. Researchers found that participants that replaced fats and animal proteins with whole grains and other high-quality carbohydrates saw lower risks of type 2 diabetes. “High intake of carbohydrates has been suggested to be associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes,” said research team leader Dr Kim Braun. “We looked at whether this effect is different for high-quality carbohydrates and low-quality carbohydrates, which include refined grains, sugary foods and potatoes. These results highlight the importance of distinguishing between carbohydrates from high- and...
The Center for Disease Control is reporting 641 cases of Cyclospora infections across 11 states that are connected to bagged salad mixes. States include Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Of those infected in the Cyclospora outbreak, 37 were hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. Cyclospora is an intestinal illness that is caused by a microscopic parasite that affects the small intestine tract. People can become infected after ingesting food or water containing the parasite. Vietnam has banned the country’s wildlife trade as part of efforts to curb the risk of future pandemics. The directive bans imports of live wild animals and wildlife products and eliminates wildlife markets, including online sites. It also calls for tougher action against people involved in illegal hunting and trading of wild animals. However, the directive does not include animals involved in medicinal use or wild animals being kept as pets according to Nguyen Van Thai, director of Save Vietnam’s Wildlife. Still, the closure of the country’s wildlife trade is significant as Vietnam is one of Asia’s biggest consumers of wildlife products. The wildlife market in Vietnam often includes rhino horns, elephant ivory, and pangolins, which are suspected to...
As coronavirus cases increase, the question of whether you can be reinfected with the virus is becoming slightly more clear. Since the start of the pandemic, researchers have been trying to figure out whether you can get infected by coronavirus more than once. Scientists had suspected that people who have had the virus, and therefore developed antibodies, have some level of protection from a second infection. The hope was to achieve herd immunity––after a large enough part of the population has been exposed, they can be immune to the virus such that new infections would significantly decrease. Despite recent anecdotes about people getting reinfected, experts say it is highly unlikely someone could be reinfected in “such a short window...
Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published an 835-page report that will be used to inform the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines. Every five years, an advisory committee of health experts reviews the latest dietary and nutrition research to help determine federal nutrition policies and healthy eating recommendations. While the report is consistent with previous guidelines, there were some notable differences. Tightened restrictions on alcoholic beverages for men Previous guidelines recommended that men limit themselves to two drinks per day and women limit consumption to one drink per day. The new report recommends that both men and women should have only one drink per day. Tightened restrictions on added sugars The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines urged Americans to limit their...
As the link between climate change and the global food system has become clear, consumers are more conscious of the environmental impacts of their food purchases. Companies have responded with plans to put carbon labels on their products to show total estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with the product. Total emissions can be difficult to calculate as the carbon footprint of food includes emissions from land conversion, the growing and harvesting processes, livestock digestion, transportation, packaging, and food processing. In 2007, Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket chain, attempted to label all its products with the total number of emissions, but halted its project due to the complexity of the calculations. However, companies like Carbon Trust have been doing carbon calculations,...

While I’ve touched on many of the individual digestive system mechanisms, I’ve never specifically talked about digestive enzymes, which happen to be a HUGE part of the puzzle. What should we know about how they work? Could they be the reason you’re digestive system is completely upset all the time? Let’s take a deep dive into digestive enzymes, supplements, and natural sources! What are Digestive Enzymes? You’ve most likely heard the term enzymes, yet that’s a pretty...

Dates were something I never really ate when I was younger. They honestly seemed kind of weird and reminded me entirely too much of prunes. But once I started to cook with plant-based ingredients, I recognized how delicious and versatile dates could be. They are not only sweet but also host a variety of health benefits thanks to the significant amount of minerals inside. I never imagined the ways you could use dates until I personally experimented with making a raw dessert that called for a date and nut-based crust – then I fell in love. Not only are dates a natural binding agent due to their sticky texture, but they are also sweet and, when paired with nuts, create a...

The results of a new study may give you a reason to make a three-bean salad or snack on hummus. According to a report published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), diets rich in protein, particularly plant protein, are linked to a lower risk of early death. The study said diets consisting of plant proteins including beans, lentils, and nuts can lower the risk of early death -- while swapping meat for a plant protein could increase your longevity. A group of researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran and Harvard University reviewed 32 studies on this topic. The authors found that a high intake of total proteins decreased the risk of death from all causes and cardiovascular diseases. The researchers...

A new study backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown just how effective tactics like social distancing, face masks, and eye protection are against the spread of coronavirus. The study found that keeping a distance of at least 3 feet from other people lowered the chances of coronavirus spread by 82%. Six feet distance could be even more effective. When wearing a mask, the chance of infection was 3% and without a mask is 17%. This means that wearing a mask reduces your chance of infection by more than 80%. For healthcare workers wearing an N95 mask, the N95 was shown to be 96% effective at protecting workers. “Physical distancing likely results in a large reduction of...
California is set to pass New York as the state with the most coronavirus cases within a few days. Johns Hopkins research data shows that the state is reporting about 9,000 new cases each day, with a total of 397,870 on June 20. New York has been reported about 700 new cases each day, with totals on Monday of 404,000. California was the first state to impose a stay at home order on March 19, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Two months later the state began reopening after its’ numbers fell dramatically. California Governor Gavin Newsom told Californians, “You have bent the curve.” The state began reopening shortly after, on May 8. Then, Memorial Day. Early June...
Iron is an essential mineral that is critical for many of the body’s functions. It is needed to make proteins, such as hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein present in red blood cells that carries oxygen from our lungs to our tissues, while myoglobin helps supply oxygen to our muscles. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), men over the age of 19 have a recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 8 mg of iron. Premenopausal women have a much greater iron requirement than men. Women aged 19-50 have an RDA of 18 mg. After age 50, the number falls in line with men at 8 mg/day. Requirements are different for children under 18, as well as for pregnant...
A new study from King’s College London found that people that have recovered from the coronavirus might lose immunity to the disease within months. This suggests that like the common cold, coronavirus could infect people regularly, or on an annual basis. 90 patients and healthcare workers were studied. The research found that their antibody levels to destroy the virus peaked after three weeks and then declined rapidly. 60% of people showed a “potent” antibody response to the virus, but only 17% kept that potency three weeks later. The study found that antibody levels fell as much as 23-fold over the period. This research is significant to vaccine development and the so-called “herd immunity” in communities affected by the coronavirus....

New York City entered Phase 4 of its’ coronavirus reopening plans on July 20. Phase 4 was supposed to include bars and restaurants, to the relief of the 25,000 restaurant owners in the city, but Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio said that indoor dining and bars would not be allowed to reopen. While the city has effectively flattened its curve, museums and indoor dining are not allowed, but zoos and botanical gardens are open. Outdoor dining is still allowed. Citing states like Texas and Florida, the government is concerned that bars and indoor dining will lead to a surge in cases. In those states, indoor dining led to the swift spread of the disease.
