Douglas Bruce, father of Colorado's much loved/much loathed TABOR amendment, has a reputation for being perpetually furious. But these days he's happy about at least one thing: the belated filing of a lawsuit on his behalf against the City and County of Denver for seizing and selling two pieces of allegedly blighted property on which he held the first deed of trust — actions that, by his estimate, have cost him $7 million or more. Prior to the complaint being served last month, Bruce offered his prediction of Denver officials' reaction: "They're going to burn their shorts, so to speak." The document was a long time coming. We first wrote about Bruce's anger related to the two Denver properties —...

David J. Phillip/AP For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters.Last week, a small rural county in south Texas went from the poster child for good pandemic response to the entire country’s worst nightmare. In a widely-covered press conference, Starr County Health Authority Jose Vasquez announced that, like many hospitals in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley region, the local hospital had reached capacity for COVID-19 patients and they had adopted a plan to start triaging the sickest patients. While that meant allocating the dwindling ICU beds to patients the most likely to survive treatment, some media outlets across the country sounded the alarm on the soon-to-be-formed “death panel” that would decide which patients would be saved at Starr...
Q: Hi Pat. Thanks for your Sunday MarketWise questions and answers. So, here’s one. Recently I heard a commercial regarding protection against having some unscrupulous people steal one’s homeownership deed. They claim something to the extent if you don’t have their service, you might put yourself in danger of having your deed being somehow overtaken. The idea being that having loans made against it, then leaving one with having to pay back the loans because their property was used as collateral. So you can’t pay the loans back, and you lose your property. The company even tells one to go on their website and enter their address to see if you’re on the list. If any of this is true,...

Texas’ southernmost county, Cameron, is home to just 1.5% of the state’s population, but it accounts for nearly 5% of its known COVID-19 fatalities. Cameron County — where 89% of residents are Hispanic and nearly a third live below the poverty line — stands out as just one stark example of widespread disparities in COVID-19 outcomes. Across Texas and the nation, the novel coronavirus is deadlier for communities of color and low-income communities. These disparities, and a wealth of other demographic information, became more apparent this week when new tallying methods at the state...

I have to confess. I love Caltrain. It’s the spine of the Peninsula’s transportation system and has been for over 150 years. Its importance to Bay Area commuters cannot be overstated. It carried 24,000 daily riders in 2004, and the ridership increased to a whopping 65,000 daily in 2019 (pre-COVID-19). Some recent history. Over a decade ago, the Peninsula rejected the High-Speed Rail Authority’s unwise plan and instead decided that Caltrain would be our high-speed rail system. To make Caltrain a 21st-century transportation system required replacing the old diesel trains with new electric cars that would be faster, quieter and cleaner; reducing emissions by 96 percent; and nearly doubling the ridership to 110,000 daily riders, taking thousands of cars off...

San Mateo County now stands alone in the greater Bay Area, an island surrounded by others whose surging coronavirus cases landed them on California’s COVID-19 monitoring list that requires closure of everything from indoor classrooms, offices and shopping malls to gyms, churches, hair salons and barbershops. Not San Mateo County. As of Monday, you could still go inside for a haircut from East Palo Alto to Pacifica or even workout inside a fitness center in Redwood City. And for the moment, San Mateo County stands as the only place in the region that can welcome students back to classrooms without special permission. But there is little cause for celebration. Local officials and businesses expect they may land on the list...

California reached another bleak coronavirus milestone this week, recording more than 100 daily deaths in the worst fatality numbers since the pandemic began. But just as troubling, health officials and experts say, is how COVID-19 is stalking certain groups, such as essential workers, and those in institutions including nursing homes and prisons, at much greater rates than those who have the ability to stay home. Californians of color are far more likely to become infected or die from the coronavirus. But the most recent surge in cases is exacerbating those inequities. “The epidemic in the West is particularly among the Latinx community. ... They are both in urban, as well as rural, agricultural areas,” said Dr. George Rutherford, an epidemiologist...

California is marking some grim milestones when it comes to coronavirus hospitalizations — as the state’s recent surge in case counts begins to threaten more and more lives.
