armored vehicle:

By GREGORY HASMAN, Gillette News Record GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — It’s not often civilians can ride in a military-style armored vehicle, but 12-year-old Anna Faldalen recently had that opportunity. “Oh my God,” she said as she saw members of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Unit park a Caiman in front of her Gillette home Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle was larger than what Faldalen imagined. It’s a large six-by-six armored vehicle that can carry a team of 10 soldiers on a mission. When fully fueled, it weighs in at more than 15 tons, the Gillette News Record reported. “I thought it was just going to be like an SUV or something,” she said. Faldalen was able to do more...

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A north Mississippi sheriff says his department was “blessed” to get an armored vehicle through a program that transfers excess military equipment to local law enforcement agencies. Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook told the Commercial Dispatch that the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected carrier will be used for search-and-rescue efforts after floods and storms, and will provide cover for the SWAT teams in hostage or active-shooter situations. “We’ve had tornadoes up here that have torn some towns apart and we have the ability to get in and out with this thing,” Crook said. The department acquired the vehicle in June and has already used it to pull out a trailer that was underwater, he said. The vehicle was...
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana police department would give up its ex-military armored truck if the city council president had his way. West Lafayette City Council President Peter Bunder gave his opinion about the vehicle after the police chief gave council members a presentation about the department’s use-of-force policies this past week, the Journal & Courier reported. Nationwide protests over racial injustice since the May 25 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis had Bunder reconsider the city’s ownership of the vehicle. Bunder said doesn’t support the call from some of his constituents for defunding the police department but suggested giving up what he called a “tank” would demilitarize the department. Mayor John Dennis and Police Chief Troy...

The Army’s new combat infantry vehicle has gone digital, meaning the service hopes to optimize design plans using computer modeling “before” bending metal on new prototypes. Many of the initial requirements and “vision” for the Army’s Optionally-Manned Fighting Vehicle remain fully intact, yet the strategic developmental path has morphed a bit and moved away from the immediate receipt of ready-built prototypes. The service still wants the main element of its Next-Generation Combat Vehicle to emerge this decade, after having realigned its approach by putting a stop to the early prototyping, by instead using digital modeling to fast-track the developmental time frame. The concept is also to improve technical quality at the same time. The Army seeks to be more efficient...
