America First Action PAC on Tuesday told Fox News that Facebook removed one of its ads, titled "On Hold," which was placed in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on July 24. Big Tech was a bipartisan punching bag at Wednesday's high-profile hearing before the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust panel. But Democrats and Republicans took different approaches in questioning how the tech giants wield power and, at times, veered far away from the hearing's stated purpose of market dominance and competition. The chief executives of the nation's top technology companies – Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple – testified virtually before a House antitrust panel that conducted a year-long investigation into whether the tech titans have crushed competition and how lawmakers may need to rethink federal laws to regulate them. The hearing comes as the companies face multiple probes both across the country and in Europe that could challenge their stature and how...
On Tuesday, Facebook’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team shared a public beta of E.gg, a nostalgia-driven site aimed at evoking the simpler days of the internet. According to E.gg’s “about” page, it aims to “make more room for the weird and off-beat” and “give creative control back to people.” But within hours, the platform was facing criticism for failing to credit creators’ work. Hide As the site itself describes, E.gg is meant to capitalize on “The Early Internet” rather than introduce something entirely new, and it does this by offering a space to create “canvases,” or “free-form mixed media collages/pages.” Hide Many on Twitter were quick to note the “Geocities vibes,” referring to the popular web hosting service that...
WASHINGTON — Retiring Wisconsin Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner on Thursday had some stern words for Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg over why Donald Trump Jr.’s account was temporarily suspended for sharing a hydroxychloroquine video. Only problem is it happened on Twitter. The awkward exchange came during an antitrust hearing where the CEOs of big tech companies including Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google were hauled before lawmakers for a Congressional roasting. Republican lawmakers like Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Sensenbrenner lashed into the CEOs over selective censorship and double-standards where postings by conservatives, including President Trump, have been silenced or restricted on social media — Jordan accusing the tech companies of being “out to get” conservatives. Sensenbrenner, 77, was particularly aggrieved by the fact...
It seems like this is what prompted TikTok to announce that it would launch a $200 million fund to help people stay on the service. Unfortunately, the fund has conditions, like a minimum age of 18, and you need to meet a set of conditions for acceptance, including how frequently you post. Depending on how Facebook, which has money to burn, makes its pitch, TikTok’s offer may seem miserly by comparison. In its pitch to creators, Facebook is likely to leverage the fact that it’s in a stronger position politically than its Chinese-owned rival. TikTok has been caught up in the same wave of anti-Asian sentiment that has seen the US crack down on Huawei and other Chinese firms. A...
Sundar Pichai and Tim CookSource: Reuters; Apple When the CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google's parent company Alphabet testify before Congress on Wednesday, it won't be exactly what the House Antitrust Subcommittee members envisioned when their probe launched last June.  For one thing, it will be held over video conferencing software due to pandemic-related precautions, eliminating the optics of the four executives swearing in before an elevated panel of lawmakers. And with 1.3 million documents already obtained from the companies, the testimony is unlikely to include any bombshells the subcommittee hasn't already learned. But regardless of how well-practiced the CEOs are when they take the witness stand, their testimonies will offer an important insight: how they are handling antitrust challenges from...
A few minutes after I sent out Thursday’s newsletter previewing this week’s antitrust hearing, news came that the event would be postponed to accommodate the memorial for Rep. John Lewis. Indeed it was, but only for two days: the hearing will now take place on Wednesday, and you can stream it here. The bad news is that the entire tech-and-democracy world will now be sitting around for another two days twiddling our thumbs while we wait for the social networking event of the summer. The good news is that the extra time will give Congress more opportunities to consider their approach to navigating a strange hearing in which the CEOs of four very different but similarly successful companies will take...

Facebook whistleblowers allege the tech giant ignored racial bias research as early as mid-2019 on Instagram's automatic removal system and told employees to keep the findings secret.   In mid-2019, researchers for Facebook-owned Instagram found that accounts that said they belonged to a black person were 50 per cent more likely to have their accounts disabled by the new moderation system than white people. The new system, designed to remove problematic and bullying accounts, was introduced to the photo-sharing app in 2019.  The revelation, made to NBC News, came from two current and one former staffers.  Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before the Senate judiciary and commerce committees on Capitol Hill on April 10, 2018, in Washington, D.C RELATED ARTICLES...

Federal authorities discovered Hollander’s visit while retracing his steps after he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot Monday after he allegedly killed US District Judge Esther Salas’ son and wounded her husband, The Daily Beast reported. If you think the black-and-white Czech film “The Painted Bird” will fulfill your monthly boring-art quota, just wait until the scene in which a nympho gets it on with a goat! Oh, the movie is brilliant without a doubt, but it’s dotted with such shocking moments, and there isn’t a whiff of pretentiousness to be found. Only guts and incredible visuals. Based on the World War II novel by Jerzy Kosiński, director Václav Marhoul’s haunting film is an obstacle course of appalling horrors, and a young boy’s journey to the center of despair. However, the drama is way better than many movies that seek to unsparingly depict the ugliness of war, only to wind up sending its audience sprinting to...
A third of the world’s small businesses slashed jobs as the coronavirus ate into their sales and forced many to shut down, a new survey shows. The figures released Tuesday detail a bleak landscape for small merchants around the globe as they grapple with COVID-19 and the massive economic crisis it has caused. Some 33 percent of small and medium-sized firms that were open in late May had reduced their workforces as a result of the pandemic, according to Facebook’s survey of 30,000 small business leaders in more than 50 countries and regions. The job losses hit hospitality businesses especially hard thanks to virus-related lockdowns in many countries, with 54 percent of hotels, cafes and restaurants reporting cuts, the...

To close out the week, let’s talk about some of the recent efforts in the United States to settle longstanding questions about moderation and encryption online. One reason I like writing about technology companies more than I like writing about Congress is that technology companies are constantly taking action. Meanwhile, Congress prefers to talk. It holds hearings, stages press conferences, and releases letters. Occasionally bills are written, and sometimes one house or the other will even go to the trouble of passing one, but rarely do they become law. There are publications...
