ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A neglected site where the Alaska territorial flag was designed, sewn and first flown will be demolished despite last-minute efforts by Alaskans and a preservation group to save it. The Seward City Council voted Monday to raze the Jesse Lee Home, once a Methodist-run facility where orphans and other displaced children from Alaska Native villages were sent, many after the Spanish Flu epidemic of a century ago. The home’s most famous resident was Benny Benson, a 13-year-old Aleut who won a territory-wide contest in 1927 with his flag design — seven gold stars forming the Big Dipper, pointing to the larger golden North Star, all on a field of blue. The design became the state...

Wilson, who was elected president of the United States in 1912, supported segregation, barred black students from Princeton University and spoke approvingly of the Ku Klux Klan. It’s been easy for Alex Stojmenovic to see the Serbian Hall’s past. He has sifted through the stacks of black-and-white photos that were left at the two-story brick building, read up on its rich history in South St. Paul and heard the personal stories from old-timers who still live in the neighborhood. It’s the future of the shuttered century-old building, which Stojmenovic bought two years ago, that’s difficult to see. “I just don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said last week. “I’ve never been in these waters. I’m just trying to fight one battle at a time.” Stojmenovic was referring to his next challenge: securing a conditional-use permit from city officials that would allow him to hold wedding receptions,...

WEST RIDGE — A last-minute effort to save a nearly 100-year-old former tennis club building was not successful, as Misericordia began demolishing the structure Thursday to make way for an expanded housing campus. Thursday morning, crews started tearing down the former Chicago Town and Tennis Club building at 1925 W. Thome Ave., which stood in the way of Misericordia’s effort to expand housing services. The Catholic charity’s decision to knock down the building sparked a preservation effort to save the Tudor-style club. Misericordia bought the building for $7.5 million in 2018 with plans to raze it to make way for 16 group homes. It will use the homes to provide housing and programing for adults and children with...

The relocation is estimated to cost $1.2 million, but will be paid solely with private donations, the board said. The 30-foot tall monument, which depicts a saluting Confederate soldier, was erected in 1906 with support from the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A report from the university published in 2016 stated that the statue was built to promote the...

Alabama State University is the next Alabama university considering renaming buildings. “I have requested a review of the names on campus buildings for consideration of removal based on connections to or leadership of racist organizations, policies or political activity,” ASU President Quinton Ross Jr. said in a statement. The results of the review will be part of a presentation and recommendations Ross said he will make to the university’s board of trustees. “We understand that the names have become a part of ASU history and may have sentimental significance for some of our alumni,” Ross said. “But as leaders of the University that was at the heart of the modern Civil Rights Movement, we feel that we must be...
The Nintendo Game Boy lived a long life. From its launch in 1989 until its discontinuation in 2008, the handheld gaming device sold hundreds of millions of units. It went through seven different design iterations, six of which were sold in the United States. And because the system was propped up by Nintendo's thousands-deep library of titles, the Game Boy remains one of the top-selling videogame consoles of all time. But for the gang of modders and hackers on the internet, these machines aren’t something to be left in the past. Rather, these underpowered, inexpensive toys are canvases for creativity and experimentation.
