By DAN SEWELL and ANDREW WELSH-HUGGINS, Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio governor's positive, then negative, tests for COVID-19 have provided fuel for skeptics of government pandemic mandates and critics of his often-aggressive polices. “I'm sure the Internet is lighting up with ‘Well, you can't believe any test,' ” Mike DeWine said in a WCOL radio interview Friday, after a whirlwind of events the day before when the initial positive showing forced the Republican to scrub a planned meeting with President Donald Trump. PHOTO VIA ADOBE IMAGESNearly 70 percent of the state’s nursing homes will receive rapid test kits from the federal government in the coming weeks after being identified by regulators as having increased risks for COVID-19 infections. President Donald Trump’s administration announced last month that it would send “point of care” COVID-19 test kits to nursing homes in viral hotspots and to facilities the federal government considered to be at an elevated risk for COVID-19 outbreaks. Twenty-four Florida counties were included on the list of hotspots the government published. And of the 693  nursing homes in the state, 471 are included on the test-kit distribution list. “We estimate based on what we have seen, there will probably be over 400 facilities...

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Friday announced 2,084 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, including 21 additional deaths. The last time the state reported more than 2,000 new cases was May 24, when IDPH reported 2,508 infections. (CBS DETROIT) – 53 employees at one Oakland County business tested positive for Covid-19 according to the Oakland County Health Department. “The big number got our attention and we haven’t seen numbers like this at a company until now,” Oakland County Health Department Spokesperson Bill Mullan. Between the end of June and beginning of August, Oakland County Health Officials say 53 employees of the United Shore Mortgage Headquarters in Pontiac, tested positive for Covid-19. “That big number was coupled with numerous complaints from employees about either relaxed or lack of enforcement for face masks, social distancing, among other complaints,” Mullan. Those complaints prompted the Oakland County Health Officer, to issue an emergency order to the company. The order...
(CBS DETROIT) – Urgent cares, pharmacies and doctors’ offices are urged to promptly report Oakland County residents COVID-19 test results to the Oakland County Health Division. The CARES Act requires that molecular (PCR or Abbott ID NOW) and antigen test results must be reported within 24 hours of test completion through existing public health reporting methods. Currently, any laboratories and providers who report COVID-19 test results electronically to the State of Michigan should continue to do so. “Swift reporting of test results detecting COVID-19 is essential to reducing the spread of the disease so that our region does not take a step back in the governor’s reopening plan,” Oakland County Executive David Coulter said. “We urge all our urgent cares,...
Six months after California lost its first victim to COVID-19, the state has recorded more than 10,000 deaths — with nearly half occurring in Los Angeles County. Officials recorded 53 additional deaths in the county — bringing the total to 4,918 — and 3,116 new infections Friday, according to the public health department. L.A. County’s total case count now stands at more than 204,000. The high number of new cases is due in part to a backlog of test results received from one lab. Officials caution that ongoing technical problems with the state’s electronic system used for gathering test results means that the county’s overall number of positive test cases is probably far higher, though it’s unclear to what extent....
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s positive-then-negative test results for the coronavirus are a reminder that no test is definitive. The governor tested positive using a rapid test Thursday, before testing negative later in the day using a more sensitive laboratory-developed test. He was tested because he was going to meet with President Donald Trump during his visit to the state. No test for coronavirus infection is perfect, and test results can be affected by a variety of factors, including the type of test used, the quality of the sample and when it was taken during the course of any infection. The number of places providing COVID-19 testing has expanded over the last week as Massachusetts and surrounding states pass travel restrictions for people coming in from out of state. A lot of testing places will provide free tests to people with no health care insurance, according to the Massachusetts COVID-19 online resource center. Some places require an appointment to take a test; it’s best to call ahead. Depending on the kind of test a person gets - SARS Antigen, PCR or anti-body - makes a difference as to whether a health care insurance provider will cover the cost or not. It also matters if the person being tested is asymptomatic. MassHealth and most health insurance providers will cover a test...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The University of Minnesota announced an expansion of a clinical investigation to determine if “natural killer” cells can be an effective treatment for COVID-19. On Thursday, the university said the first patient is receiving the novel cell therapy, which is currently also under clinical investigation as a treatment option for acute myeloid leukemia and lymphoma. According to the university, first-of-its-kind, engineered natural killer (NK) cells may play a role in diminishing viral replication of the novel coronavirus. University medical experts say natural killer cells have known to play a role in protecting the body against viral infection, but it’s not yet known if they can safely control COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel...

The latest numbers on the coronavirus pandemic in Maryland look good, with the exception of the area around a popular vacation spot. The statistics released by Gov. Larry Hogan’s office Thursday show that the percentage of COVID-19 tests that came back positive Wednesday was 3.83%, bringing the statewide seven-day average to 4.03%, the lowest level since the pandemic began. The percentage of testing is considered an important metric, because it shows that enough testing is being done to find and isolate outbreaks. Montgomery County is doing even better than the state, the governor’s office said, with a positivity rate of 2.54%. COVID-19 positivity rates statewide and county-by-county for Aug. 6, 2020. In most places in America, it’s not hard to get a Covid-19 test right now. You can walk into a clinic, pharmacy, even your local Wal-Mart, and walk out again, nose swabbed, without too much trouble. Getting the results of your test, on the other hand ... well, let’s just say you should be prepared to wait, and wait. And wait. This is a largely different problem than the testing woes that plagued America’s pandemic response in the early months of March and April. Back then, supply shortages, faulty test kits, and federal regulations limiting testing to only certain kinds of labs hindered widespread availability of tests. Since then, diagnostics manufacturers have significantly boosted production of the materials required to...

BALDWIN HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- Free COVID-19 antibody testing is available to the public beginning Wednesday at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. "I was surprised that's why I got down here as soon as possible," said Rochelle Barlow, who was accommodated despite not having a recommended appointment. "The majority of people who have been infected don't know they've been infected. They may have had mild symptoms or no symptoms at all," said Dr. Douglas Harrington, Chairman of the GUARDaHEART Foundation, which helped organize the testing event. A positive result of the antibody blood test indicates a person had the COVID-19 virus in the past and has developed some level of immunity. Harrington says the test being used is one of the...

U.S. testing for the coronavirus is dropping even as infections remain high and the death toll rises by more than 1,000 a day, a worrisome trend that officials attribute largely to Americans getting discouraged over having to wait hours to get a test and days or weeks to learn the results. An Associated Press analysis found that the number of tests per day slid 3.6% over the past two weeks to 750,000, with the count falling in 22 states. That includes places like Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Iowa where the percentage of positive tests is high and continuing to climb, an indicator that the virus is still spreading uncontrolled. Amid the crisis, some health experts are calling for the introduction...

Florida’s major coronavirus outbreak has come very, very close to Gov. Ron DeSantis, and maybe to Donald Trump as well. Last week, DeSantis attended a Florida Sheriffs Association meeting. As of Monday, five of the attendees of that meeting have tested positive for COVID-19, including Corrections Secretary Mark Inch and Department of Corrections Deputy Secretary Ricky Dixon. Most Americans are waiting more than three days for their coronavirus test results, undermining the need to quickly isolate people and contact trace, a new survey reveals. Researchers found that 63 percent of those who've been tested for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, did not get results back for at least 72 hours. The average wait was four days and, for about five percent of surveyors, they wait to learn if they were positive or negative was 14 days. With Tropical Storm Isaias headed for the Carolinas, Florida now has dodged two storms during Gov. Ron DeSantis’ 19 months in office. As a result, new emergency and shelter strategies, developed over the past year under Florida Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz and since the March emergence of COVID-19, have not been put to the ultimate test. DeSantis was not disappointed about that Monday, calling Tropical Storm Isaias' weekend near-miss as a “good trial run” for state emergency management systems. “We did not get the major impact we were prepared for, which is a very good thing, but we did get a good trial run for what will likely be a busy hurricane season,” DeSantis said Monday...
It was no routine shot in the arm.  Last week university professor Gary Stradiotto became one of 30,000 volunteers helping to test a vaccine in the world's biggest COVID-19 study. Stradiotto, 52, an adjunct professor of Political Science at the University of San Diego, volunteered for the final phase of the Moderna study and received his first 100mg of the experimental mRNA-1273 vaccine dose on Thursday.  He's due to get a second and final injection on August 26. Moderna's vaccine is one of several promising candidates in the final stretch of the global vaccine race, as the US tops more than 155,000 deaths and surpasses 4.6 million reported cases of the virus, according to government figures.  Stradiotto said he decided to volunteer...
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration’s plan to provide every nursing home with a fast COVID-19 testing machine comes with an asterisk: The government won’t supply enough test kits to check staff and residents beyond an initial couple of rounds. A program that sounded like a game-changer when it was announced last month at the White House is now prompting concerns that it could turn into another unfulfilled promise for nursing homes, whose residents and staff represent a tiny share of the US population but account for as many as 4 in 10 coronavirus deaths, according to some estimates. “I think the biggest fear is that the instruments may be delivered but it won’t do any good, if you don’t...
By Marc Frank HAVANA (Reuters) - Twenty-nine Cubans recently returned from Venezuela have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last eight days, according to government data, raising questions about health conditions in the South American country under tough U.S. sanctions. There is no open travel in Cuba due to the pandemic, so most returnees would likely be from the 20,000 health personnel stationed in Venezuela. At least two of the cases were reported in provincial media as health workers. All the cases were listed by the health ministry in daily reports covering July 26 through August 3, which provided little detail. "Fifty-six-year-old Cuban citizen. Resident of San Luis municipality, Pinar del Rio province. Traveler arriving from Venezuela," reads one of...

Axios’ Jonathan Swan grilled Donald Trump on the president’s mindset around Covid-19 testing and death numbers during their 40-minute interview last week. Trump largely pushed that more testing equals more cases, and when Swan pressed the president on death rates as a proportion of population, Trump brought out a series of charts that showed the United States “lowest in numerous categories.” “We’ve done 55, it’ll be close to 60 million tests,” Trump said. “And there are those that say you can test too much. You do know that.” “Who says that?” Swan asked. “Read the manuals, read the books,” Trump shot back. “Manuals? what manuals?” Swan asked. “What books?” Trump didn’t specify any readings related to his claim about...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Ensuring teachers and school staff have quick access to a COVID-19 test if needed is part of Minnesota’s school reopening plan. But it won’t be the nasal swab or a blood test. Instead, they’ll spit into a tube. So what is a COVID-19 saliva test and why is Minnesota going that route? Good question. Major League Baseball players spitting is so ingrained in the sport that WCCO’s Heather Brown even tried to figure out why they have a habit of hawking saliva and seeds. The crude compulsion is now banned by MLB to help stop the spread of COVID-19. But every other day, players like pitcher Collin McHugh still spit, just in a tube. It’s how the...

(CNN) — If college campuses want to remain open this fall, it may take frequent screening of college students, according to a modeling study published Friday in the journal JAMA Network Open. But if students and colleges adhere to strict policies such as mandated indoor masking and handwashing, the authors said less frequent testing may be adequate.
