On a balmy evening in Atwater Village, diners at candlelit tables shared plates of Cuban food and flights of beer, serenaded by an accordion player down the block. The scene was almost romantic, but for one catch: The tables were a few feet from rush-hour traffic zipping past on Glendale Boulevard. “A table in a parking space, I was a little surprised,” utility inspector Luis Castillo said as he and a co-worker ate blackened tilapia and arroz con pollo. “But it’s nice to sit down and eat.” The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped commutes, workplaces and schools. Now, Southern California’s street network, the region’s largest public space, is transforming, too. With COVID-19 cases surging, and indoor dining banned, more...
With the number of dining room customers reduced by COVID-19 restrictions, the Leesburg will close a block of South King Street every Friday and Saturday night to create temporary outdoor dining areas for nearby businesses in the Virginia town. Restaurants taking part this weekend include Black Hoof Brewing Company, Delirium Cafe, Echelon Wine Bar, King Street Oyster Bar, Leesburg Gourmet, and The Wine Kitchen, according to a news release...
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade restaurant owners are preparing to close their indoor dining areas again, after an emergency order Monday from Mayor Carlos Gimenez. After initially demanding all restaurants close except for takeout and delivery, the mayor decided later to allow outdoor seating, but with no more than four people at a table and low music to prevent shouting. Some restaurant owners say the move does not help much. “We are trying to figure out why the decision was made,” says Ody Lugo, owner of Giardino’s Gourmet Salads. “Where are the facts that say that restaurants are the ones that have had the increase?” She says there has been confusion with all the mixed messages. Lugo, along...

Some neighborhoods and municipalities have even blocked off streets in order to give guests room to spread out. As a result, this doesn't have to be a stay-at-home summer, not as long as you seek out businesses doing things right. For Piedmont residents Naomi and Sunny Grewal, it was an early Father’s Day celebration and the couple’s first time out without their 1- and 3-year-old children since March. Kitchen Story, the Oakland eatery known for modern Korean food, was the last restaurant the Grewals dined at before the lockdown. It felt almost ceremonial to return on the day Alameda County allowed restaurants to resume outdoor dining. “We love it here and have been supporting this restaurant with take-out from the start,” said Naomi Grewal, sitting on the three-table patio and covering her face when a server approached with their order. “It feels good to be out. We also feel safe because there’s no one else here.” After three months, Alameda...
