A Texas mom says Southwest Airlines kicked her off a flight from Midland to Houston after her 3-year-old autistic son refused to wear a mask. “He is three and has autism and sensory processing disorders, so he wouldn’t keep the mask on,” Alyssa Sadler, of Houston, told ABC affiliate KTRK. “They’re trying to talk to him, tell him, ‘You have to wear it. It’s not an option,’ and I’m trying to explain to them, you know, he doesn’t understand what you’re saying.” The mom said her son “doesn’t like things touching his face.” “He was screaming. He was throwing a fit. He was screaming no, no, no,” she told NBC Houston. After the child refused to mask up, the captain...
First we were told face masks weren’t helpful in reducing the spread of the coronavirus because they would cause us to touch our face more and then spread the disease to others. Then we were told to wear the masks to save lives and reopen the economy. Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns face masks with vents or valves don’t reduce the spread of the virus, as those additions that allow the user to breathe easier can deposit more “expelled respiratory droplets that can reach others.” In guidance updated late last week, the CDC added a warning about face masks with exhalation valves or vents. “The purpose of masks is to keep respiratory droplets from reaching others...

SAN ANTONIO – As face coverings become an essential part of everyday life during the coronavirus pandemic, researchers are saying that some options may be counterproductive. Researchers from Duke University published a study on Friday that focused on commonly available face masks and coverings, and how efficient they are in protecting people from infection. They found cotton masks have a strong effect, but bandanas, not so much. With neck fleece, or gaiter-type neck coverings, those could be as ineffective as not wearing a mask at all, or even worse. “We noticed that speaking through some masks (particularly the neck fleece) seemed to disperse the largest droplets into a multitude of smaller droplets, which explains the apparent increase in droplet count...
Police officers may not wear face coverings in Florida's Marion County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Billy Woods told his deputies on Tuesday that they are not allowed to wear face masks to protect themselves from COVID-19 unless they are stationed in a hospital, directly working with a suspect who may have the virus, or if they are at high risk for a serious infection. Woods also forbade visitors to the sheriff's office from wearing face masks. "My order will stand as is when you are on-duty/working as my employee and representing my Office — masks will not be worn," Woods wrote in an email obtained by the Ocala Star-Banner. "For all of these exceptions, the moment that enforcement action is...
Neck gaiters used to cover a person's face might be worse than not wearing a mask at all, according to a recent study. Mandates for mask use in public during the coronavirus pandemic, amplified by a worldwide shortage of commercial supplies, have led to the widespread use of homemade masks and other face coverings, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. “You can really see the mask is doing something,” said one of the study’s co-authors, Warren S. Warren, a professor at Duke University. “There’s a lot of controversy, and people say, ‘Well, masks don’t do anything.’ Well, the answer is some don’t, but most do.” The federal government has recommended the public wear...
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Consistent wearing of face masks by a majority of the population have emerged as the best way to slow the spread of coronavirus, but not all face coverings are equal in effectiveness, according to a new study by Duke University researchers. (credit: Science Advances) The study tested 14 different face masks or mask alternatives with the same protocol – a control trial where a speaker wore no protective covering and another test where a speaker was recorded repeating the sentence, “stay healthy, people” five times. Non-valve N95 masks, the type typically worn by doctors and healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients, were found to be the most protective face coverings. Hand-made cotton face coverings were also...
Some face coverings, like neck gaiters, are actually worse than going without a mask, breaking down large droplets into smaller particles and allowing them to escape, Duke University researchers discovered in a study released on Friday. Researchers at Duke University examined several types of face coverings — from cloth masks to bandanas to neck gaiters — to review their effectiveness of stopping large respiratory droplets. Determining the effectiveness of masks, they said,  “is a complex topic,” in part, because “the infection pathways for COVID-19 are not yet fully understood and are complicated by many factors such as the route of transmission, correct fit and usage of masks, and environmental variables.” Nonetheless, several states, local governments, and businesses have implemented mask mandates...
Not all face masks and coverings are as effective at blocking respiratory droplets when we talk, cough and sneeze, according to a brand-new study. Research from Duke University scientists tested the efficiency of 14 types of face coverings being used during the COVID-19 pandemic. The N95, used by medical staff, is the most effective, the study found. Three-layer surgical masks also rated high. Fleece masks and bandannas offer little protection and may be no different than using no mask at all, the study found. Meanwhile, neck fleeces frequently worn by runners were the least effective and actually allowed more droplets to escape than not wearing a mask at all. You can view the results here.
DURHAM, N.C. -- By now, when it comes to protection against the coronavirus, we all know that N-95 masks are better than surgical masks which are better than cloth masks which are better than a scarf or bandanna.RELATED: These California cities will fine you for not wearing a mask or face coveringBut are they all better than nothing?"Like the common sense of just putting your hand in front of your face, we really thought that any mask would be better than nothing," Dr. Eric Westman of Duke University said.Westman, who specializes in internal medicine, was not having to deal with COVID-19 patients, but he still wanted to do something that might help stop the spread of the deadly virus. He realized...

Looking to update your coronavirus face mask? A recent study has identified the most and least effective face coverings, with one face mask in particular claiming the No.1 spot for being the most effective at curbing the spread of COVID-19. Researchers at Duke University compared 14 commonly available masks and face coverings to see which was most effective at stopping the spread of respiratory droplets. The best face coverings for preventing droplet spread were N95 masks without valves, they found, while fleece coverings and bandanas were shown to be "counterproductive." The main route of coronavirus spread is said to occur from person to person through respiratory droplets containing the virus when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby,...

Avocado The CDC now recommends wearing a cloth face cover in public to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 — wearing one is mandatory in cities such as New York and San Francisco. Medical workers need surgical masks and N95 respirators, so the general public should use cloth face coverings, either by buying them or making them at home.  Cloth face coverings mostly help protect other people from your germs, which is especially important since a significant portion of people can transmit the virus while being asymptomatic or presymptomatic.  Retailers such as Reformation and Caraa have repurposed their production facilities to make non-medical grade masks for the public. Birx, the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, advised Tennessee officials to close bars and implement other social distancing guidelines to help curb an uptick in coronavirus cases while at an event with Lee and other public health officials on Monday. Soon after Birx laid out her advice for the state, Lee, a Republican, said he had other plans. Tennessee’s attorney general has issued an opinion that mandates requiring citizens to wear face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is constitutionally defensible. The opinion addresses whether mask mandates infringe on constitutional right to liberty and freedom of speech, and whether local governments have authority to issue such mandates. In both cases Attorney General Herbert Slatery wrote that mandated mask wearing is constitutionally defensible as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “As a general proposition, a governmental mandate that requires the general population to wear face coverings in public due to the health emergency caused by COVID-19 would be constitutionally defensible,” the opinion reads. On infringement of constitutional rights, Slatery opined that mandating facial coverings do...

By JOHN O'CONNOR, AP Political Writer SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Just weeks away from the ringing of the schoolhouse bell, scores of people rallied at the state Capitol Saturday against the state's requirement that schoolchildren must wear face coverings this fall to discourage transmission of the highly contagious and potentially deadly coronavirus. In a state where the numbers of cases of COVID-19 are rising, if not as quickly as they are surging in several other states, the protestors took aim at Gov. J.B. Pritzker's broadside this week that people who forego face coverings are “the enemy.” “I don’t think all this pressure needs to be put on the kids,” said Adam Dunn of Decatur, whose kids are out of school....

Days after announcing customers are required to wear face masks while shopping in their stores, major U.S. retailers appear to be showing leniency in how the rules are applied.  Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, Walgreens and CVS had initially required shoppers to wear masks but now in the hope of avoiding confrontations between angry customers and employees it appears to be little more than a suggestion, rather than a legally enforceable instruction. Having retailers take on the role of the 'mask police' puts them in an uncomfortable position at a time when many shops are in no position financially to refuse business.  Major retailers brought in rules requiring masks to be worn by customers including Walmart, pictured, but some companies...

LONDON (Reuters) - Shoppers in England were ordered to wear face coverings for the first time on Friday as new rules came into force, albeit with the government relying on customers' common sense to stick to the policy rather than active policing. The requirement, announced on July 13, marks the latest step in Britain's slow acceptance of the benefits of face coverings in preventing the spread of COVID-19. "I don't like them, but if it keeps people safe you’ve got to do it," said retiree Michael James, wearing a black face covering. Fans at NFL games will be required to wear face coverings this season, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy tweeted early Wednesday. The mandate will be enforced nationwide and supersedes lack of a local lawful mandate. The announcement comes a day after the NFL Players Association said 95 players had tested positive for COVID-19. The NFL and NFLPA earlier this week announced they had agreed on testing protocols as players expressed concerns ahead of the season. Players and team personnel will be tested every day for the first two weeks of training camp, then every other day, as long as their teams positive test rate is and remains under 5%.
