As Minnesota United has advanced to the final four in the MLS is Back Tournament, the Loons have shown they belong in the league’s top tier. But one question remains: Are they still underdogs? Head coach Adrian Heath has routinely said yes, fueling this debate in his comments to reporters. However, center back and team leader Michael Boxall sees it another way heading into the team’s semifinal match-up against Orlando City at 7 pm. Thursday. “I don’t think there’s any way we can be underdogs with how we feel about how we’re playing,” Boxall told the Pioneer Press on Tuesday. “Yeah, it’s going to be a tough match, but put me in a dog fight with my boys and I’m...
Minnesota United has wanted another French fullback for more than a year. As Romain Metanire arrived and performed at an MLS All-Star level in 2019, the Loons were trying to sign of another Ligue 1 defender but were unsuccessful with that unidentified target. Monday, Minnesota announced the addition of one: Bakaye Dibassy, a French defender from Amiens. Dibassy was acquired with Targeted Allocation Money used for elevated signings. “I liken him to Romain Metanire – very strong, loves to run, loads of experience and a great character fit for this club,” United manager Adrian Heath said in a statement. “We are delighted to bring him in.” Dibassy, who was originally a D.C. United transfer target, had 130 appearances for Amiens....
The delirium prompted by scoring a goal can lead a player down many paths. With the spotlight on his back, goal scorers can sprint off erratically for a solo parade or stop to do a pre-planned celebration; he can seek a group hug from teammates on the field; or he can beeline off the stage to share the moment with other squad members relegated to wearing pennies on the sidelines. When Jacori Hayes scored the winning goal in Minnesota United’s 4-1 thumping of San Jose on Saturday, the midfielder chose the latter because he was one of those benchwarmers to start the MLS is Back Tournament in mid-July in Kissimmee, Fla. “It was complete ecstasy,” Hayes said. “As soon as...

The San Jose Earthquakes’ beautiful run in the MLS Is Back tournament came to a crashing end Saturday. Minnesota United disrupted the Quakes’ potent offense to score a dominating 4-1 victory in a quarterfinal game at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Florida. United will face Orlando SC (2-1-2, overall) on Thursday for a trip to the tournament championship Aug. 12. Orlando advanced to the semifinals past favored Los Angeles FC in a penalty shootout on Friday. San Jose (2-2-2 overall) suffered its first defeat of the tournament and heads home not knowing what happens next. Major League Soccer executives have yet to announce if the regular season will resume as the United States struggles to control...
United FC head coach Adrian Heath and midfielder Jan Gregus refrained from sharing their true views of goalkeeper Tyler Miller’s new mustache, but both agreed, with the Loons winning in the MLS is Back Tournament, it shouldn’t be shaved for superstition sake. “Oh, my god, I can’t really tell you what I think about it,” Gregus said. “Because (laughs) it looks … awkward. But I told him, there is no chance for him to shave it now.” Miller’s new look was front and center on ESPN moments after he saved Columbus’ final penalty kick attempts, from midfielder Chris Cadden, in Tuesday’s round of 16 match. The stop helped propel Minnesota to win 5-3 on PKs and advance to the quarterfinals...
An annual school-supply drive will be held this year — with a twist. Normally, hundreds of volunteers meet for the Action Day event, to pack backpacks with school supplies for about 40,000 children. But this year, volunteers will pack the backpacks in their homes, and officials will deliver them to the students. The Virtual Action Day will be sponsored by the Greater Twin Cities United Way and the soccer club Minnesota United FC. “While we aren’t able to host Action Day at Allianz Field the way we hoped to this year, the need in our community has never been bigger,” said club CEO Chris Wright. Instead of a massive one-day push in a centralized location, the event this year will...
When Ike Opara — the 2019 MLS defender of the year — did not  travel to the MLS is Back Tournament because of an undisclosed pre-existing condition, Minnesota United’s odds for success looked longer. But Jose Aja has stepped in to fill Opara’s center-back spot and helped the Loons advance out of Group D and into the Round of 16 against streaking Columbus Crew. First kick is 7 p.m. Tuesday in Kissimmee, Fla. Yet when American teammates Chase Gasper and Ethan Finlay mention Aja’s contributions, it isn’t so much about his interventions, clearances, nor his 6-foot-4 presence on set pieces in both boxes. “Gentle giant,” Finlay said. Added Gasper, “ He’s one of the nicest, greatest people I’v ever met,...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Ethan Finlay scored a pair of first-half goals for Minnesota United, but Jonathan Lewis’ third goal of the season early in the second half gave the Colorado Rapids a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night in the MLS is Back tournament. The draw locked up second place in Group D for Minnesota, which had already clinched a spot in the knockout round of the tournament. The Loons (4-0-1) remained unbeaten on the season and will next play Columbus in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Colorado (2-2-1) had previously been eliminated after losing its first two matches of the tournament. But the Rapids didn’t back down in their final match in Florida. Colorado took the...

Room service containers had been piling up on Minnesota United’s floor at the Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla., one day this month when a few Loons players thought it would be a good time to play pranks. Jan Gregus, Marlon Hairston and Kevin Molino were in on it, sneaking around to stack them in front of each other’s hotel room doors and make it tough to get in or out. Then they conspired against Romain Metanire’s room. “But the moment we started to do it, (Metanire) was just around the corner and was shouting at us, ‘What are you doing!?’ ” Gregus relayed. “It was a funny situation.” In a transition from France’s Ligue 1 to...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The PGA Tour is in Minnesota this week with the 3M Open teeing off Thursday. No spectators will be on the course at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine because of the pandemic. It’s a change from last year when more than 125,000 fans attended the nearly week-long event. The tournament’s fundraising, however, is still taking place. The eight partner charities are M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, Greater Twin Cities United Way, VEAP, Urban Ventures, Lake Street Council, YWCA of Minneapolis, YWCA of St. Paul and the Science Museum of Minnesota. “It was quickly apparent that we were going to focus our charitable efforts on COVID-19 relief and organizations committed to rebuilding the Twin...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United played to a scoreless draw on Friday night in the MLS is Back tournament in a match in which scoring opportunities were limited for both sides. The teams remained at the top of Group D with four points, although Real Salt Lake has the advantage on goal differential. Still, it was a missed opportunity for both clubs as the winner would have clinched a spot in the round of 16 with a victory. Instead, the match lacked excitement and scoring chances, and was the second match of the tournament to finish in a scoreless draw. The best scoring chance for either side came in the closing seconds of first-half...

The “MLS is Back” tournament has featured some hiccups in the form of teams withdrawing due to positive COVID-19 tests. Matches have been cancelled and it seems like a minor miracle there are games being played at all. The fact there is indeed competition on the pitch...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Kevin Molino scored in the seventh-minute of second-half stoppage time as Minnesota United rallied with two late goals to beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1 on Sunday night in the MLS is Back tournament. The opener of Group D was highly entertaining and switched midway through the second half after Sporting Kansas City was the dominant side early in the match. Minnesota stole the victory with two goals in stoppage time as Kansas City was unable to hold on after going down to 10-men. Minnesota pulled even in the second-minute of stoppage time after Jan Gregus’ free kick into the penalty area was directed into the net by Kansas City’s Khiry Shelton for...
After a four-month absence, the Loons became the first Minnesota pro sports team to return to games amid the coronavirus pandemic. Then they treated supporters with some late heroic. Minnesota United was able to fight back to steal a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City in a Group D match at the MLS is Back Tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla. After falling behind in the first half, the Loons benefited from Kansas City going down to 10 men on Tim Melia’s red card in the 74th minute. But Minnesota wasn’t able to take advantage until stoppage time. Minnesota’s set-piece taker Jan Gregus whipped in a dangerous ball on a free kick...
Minnesota United is pursuing the addition of French center back Bakaye Dibassy, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Sunday. Dibassy, 30, has played for Amiens in France’s Ligue 1 since 2016 and the Paris-born player has four appearances the Mali national team. Fellow MLS club D.C. United was interested in Dibassy in February, according to the Washington Post. Amiens was “apparently hesitant” to move Dibassy because they were in a relegation battle, but Ligue 1 season has since been canceled due to the coronavirus. Minnesota had Dibassy’s discovery rights, the Post reported, and D.C. was prepared to trade with Minnesota for the rights to acquire him but that cooled when pandemic hit. Dibassy, who...
Minnesota United has had zero confirmed positive tests for COVID-19 since they arrived in Orlando, Fla., for the MLS is Back Tournament on June 28. Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City — the Loons’ first opponent come 7 p.m. Sunday — has had one player test positive for the coronavirus, The Athletic reported Friday. “I’m sure it’s being dealt with in the appropriate manner, and we’ll just wait for the league (MLS) to tell us if and when everything is going ahead as normal,” Loons coach Adrian Heath said. But nothing is normal now. Two MLS clubs, Nashville and Dallas, have had outbreaks within their teams, and the league removed them from the tournament earlier this week. Nashville had...
Minnesota United coach Adrian Heath started nine of his first-choice 11 players during a tune-up scrimmage against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday in Orlando, Fla. The two absences could be an issue for the Loons when the MLS is Back Tournament starts for them on Sunday. The missing Loons were center back Ike Opara, who did not travel with the club because of a preexisting condition, and defensive midfielder Ozzie Alonso, out with a minor hamstring injury. Without Opara and Alonso — two stalwarts who helped the Loons make the 2019 MLS Cup playoffs — the Fire led 2-0 at the half. The scrimmage was then called off due to thunderstorms at the ESPN’s Wide World Of Sports...
In the early twentieth century, few meeting and event spaces in Minnesota were designed to be accessible to the state’s deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing community. In 1916, Margaret Brooks Thompson hired deaf architect Olof Hanson to design the Charles Thompson Memorial Hall in St. Paul in memory of her husband. It was the first social club designed exclusively for the deaf in the United States. The Charles Thompson Memorial Hall’s origins can be traced back to the Fourth Convention of the Minnesota Association of the Deaf at the Minnesota Institute for Defectives (Deaf, Blind and Feeble-minded) in Faribault, Minnesota, in 1896. It was there that Charles Thompson, the son of a wealthy St. Paul banker, met and fell in love...
One week before its schedule season restart, Minnesota United called off its tune-up scrimmage on Sunday night. The Loons and Columbus Crew each went to a field for their scheduled friendly in Orlando, Fla., but jointly decided in an “overabundance of caution” to not play each other amid COVID-19 concerns, a United spokesman told the Pioneer Press. Instead, each club were to hold intra-squad scrimmages to get ready for their first group-stage games in the MLS is Back Tournament slated to start Wednesday. The Loons’ first scheduled game is next Sunday against the Colorado Rapids. The Crew confirmed on Thursday it had one played with a positive test for the coronavirus. United had a positive test...
Minnesota United defender Ike Opara did not travel with the team to Orlando for the MLS is Back Tournament. He announced the news on via his Twitter account on Thursday morning, citing a “pre-existing condition” that he is continuing to rehab. It does not appear to be coronavrius-related. It’s unclear if Opara will join the team at some point. (1/2) Before it’s reported elsewhere, I want to let the fans know that I am currently not in Orlando with my teammates. I am continuing my physical rehabilitation on a preexisting condition that was agreed upon between the league and MNUFC. I’m sad I’m not there with my guys — Ike Opara (@ikeopara) July 2, 2020 ...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Major League Soccer is moving its teams to Florida to participate in the “MLS Is Back” tournament. Minnesota United FC will begin on July 12, facing Sporting Kansas City. They arrived in Orlando Sunday morning, and are now at the EPSN Wide World of Sports Complex inside Disney World — for the foreseeable future. Anyone inside must receive written permission to leave or they will be subject to enhanced testing and a 10-day quarantine. Eight security checkpoints are set up with closed-circuit television to monitor. Forward Mason Toye says it’s all in the effort to give players peace of mind while they focus on one thing. “Of course it’s to win at all costs, and to...
An exodus is underway among Minnesota United’s youth academy players. With the Loons’ firing or furloughing its entire youth academy staff last week, players on the club’s Under-17 team and others within the younger three levels have left or have been exploring options at rival MLS academies and in college. Two players departed earlier this year to join New York Red Bulls’ system, another is now with Real Salt Lake and others are believed to have tried out for spots at Sporting Kansas City this weekend. Patrick Weah, whose cousin Tim is on the U.S. men’s national team and uncle George was a star for Liberia in the 1990s, had been training with the Loons’ first team...
Minnesota United has laid off or furloughed its entire youth academy staff, including director Tim Carter, the Loons chief soccer officer Manny Lagos confirmed Thursday to the Pioneer Press. The news, which was first reported by The Athletic, is part of the Loons’ cuts made Wednesday, and it puts the MLS-mandatory feeder program in a hole. The Loons — which list four youth teams Under-17, U15, U14 and U13 — have to wait for MLS to identify how it will go forward with its youth academy system in the wake of the U.S. Development Academy folding with the coronavirus pandemic outbreak. “We feel like we are planning very hard and have been working on stuff for five...
Minnesota United’s opening schedule for the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Fla., was revealed Wednesday. The Loons shared they will play three night games on ESPN/ESPN Deportes: Sporting Kansas City at 7 p.m. July 12, followed Real Salt Lake at 9:30 p.m. July 17 and then Colorado Rapids at 9:30 July 22. If Minnesota finishes first or second among these Western Conference foes in Group D, they will advance to the Round of 16 from July 25-28. If they are among the four best third-place finishers, they also will continue playing in the league-wide tournament through mid-August. MLS clubs can start arriving at the Swan and Dolphin Hotel in central Florida this week for games at ESPN’s...
Gridlock surrounded Allianz Field in St. Paul late Friday morning. Traffic backed up from Snelling Avenue onto Interstate 94 exit ramps and all the side streets surrounding Minnesota United’s soccer stadium. With COVID-19, there was no Major League Soccer game to be played and rush-hour traffic has become a thing of the past. Some drivers caught up in the scene honked; others waited patiently. The only explanation was the “Farmers’ Market in a Box” drive being held on the north side of the St. Paul stadium. No other issues were causing congestion on those roads at that time, a Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman said. The food-distribution efforts headed by Keystone Community Services and Second Harvest Heartland...
Minnesota learned Thursday the three opponents they will face in the MLS is Back Tournament next month in Orlando, Fla. The Loons will play three Western Conference clubs in Group D: Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City and the Colorado Rapids. The tournament’s top seeds were announced Wednesday. In the Western Conference, it was Los Angeles FC, a 2019 semifinalist which set an MLS record for points in a season; Seattle Sounders, the MLS Cup champion last year; and Real Salt Lake, the next highest point total in the conference last season. United head coach Adrian Heath took issue with Orlando City being named a top seed of one of the Eastern Conference groups. Orlando finished 11th in the...
Minnesota United players did not practice on Monday, one day ahead of the reported deadline for the Major League Soccer Players Association to come to an agreement with the league on a return-to-play plan. The United have been holding voluntary practices at the National Sports Center in Blaine since May 12, but the decision to not participate in practices Monday came a day after players voted on a plan that was then sent back to the owners for the resumption of the 2020 season, which has been halted due to the novel coronavirus. “This evening, MLS Players voted to approve a package of economic concessions for the 2020 season, modifications to the recently agreed-upon CBA, including its extension...
