Aang in "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Nickelodeon Two years ago Netflix announced a "reimagined, live-action" version of the beloved animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was in the works. After the live-action movie disappointed with a white-washed cast and lackluster action, fans were worried about the coming TV show. The one buffer to concerns was the fact that the original series' creators — Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko — were in charge of the new live-action show. But DiMartino and Konietzko announced Wednesday they were leaving the project, citing Netflix's "negative and unsupportive environment" for their vision.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Meghan Markle pulled out of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews’ wedding out of fear she would “create a media circus.” The claim is being made in the bombshell book “Finding Freedom,” written by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. Numerous palace insiders came forward to the two journalists and detailed what led to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure as senior members of the British royal family. The couple currently resides in Markle’s native California with their son Archie. On Wednesday, the U.K.’s DailyMail reported Middleton, 36, and her mother Carole Middleton, 65, “reluctantly” invited the 39-year-old to the May 2017 celebration but “privately harbored concerns” that her appearance with Prince Harry, 35, would “overshadow the main event.”...

Local school councils across Chicago have until Aug. 14 to vote on whether to keep or remove school police officers. The meetings so far have raised long-standing issues around the transparency of the groups, how much they are supported and trained, and lackluster participation. The district recently announced it would post a list of campuses with police officers and a centralized list of upcoming votes on the issue. But as the district’s list doesn’t include links to participate in meetings, Chalkbeat and Block Club are continuing to track the upcoming meetings and links to participate. More than 70 schools will vote on the issue by August 14, per a mandate from the district. Chicago has 144 resource officers at schools, 48 mobile school officers, and...

As for permadeath, it’s just what it sounds like. At its most aggressive, a single death ends your entire game. The truly insane can combine this with Grounded mode and see how far they can make it, but there are also more forgiving options. Permadeath can be set to “one day,” which means a death sends you back to the beginning of the day your character was playing through. Getting through an entire day without dying is still pretty challenging, so there’s also a “per chapter” permadeath. Given each day has about a half-dozen chapters, that should be a bit more manageable. Given the challenge of these modes, Naughty Dog is adding two new trophies to the game:...
The Last of Us Part 2’s first major post-launch content update, set to be released on Thursday, Aug. 13, will bring back the first game’s extremely challenging “Grounded” difficulty setting and introduce a permadeath mode, developer Naughty Dog announced Tuesday. The news confirms information that leaked out on Monday via the game’s Trophies, which Naughty Dog recently updated with two new ones that mentioned permadeath and the Grounded difficulty. For all the life-threatening peril that you face in The Last of Us Part 2, it’s not necessarily a super tough game on the default difficulty settings, as long as you play smartly. The new Grounded difficulty, which players of the original The Last of Us may remember, greatly amps up...
The Last of Us Part II is getting its first major update today, with developer Naughty Dog adding a slew of new visual and audio effect modifiers, optional cheat codes, and two new difficulty settings. The update is available for all owners of the game for free, and it should add a bit of much-needed replay value for those who may want to try the existing New Game Plus option or players still interested in trophy hunting. The bulk of the update is a set of new visual and audio effects, alongside cheat codes, that can make The Last of Us Part II a much trippier and less stressful affair. For instance, you can give the game an 8-bit...

Scientists have found the remnant of a strange, dismembered globular cluster at the edge of our Milky Way galaxy, in the Phoenix constellation. Globular clusters are dense balls of about one million ancient stars, all bound by gravity, at the outermost edge of our galaxy, the Milky Way.   Using the Anglo-Australian Telescope in the outback of New South Wales, researchers measured the speeds of a stream of stars in the Phoenix constellation, which they believe are the remains of a cluster.   The ancient collection of stars was torn apart by the gravity of the Milky Way more than two billion years ago, when Earth's most-complex lifeforms were single-celled organisms. The globular cluster is thought to be 'the last of its...

As you all know, Swift hit us with her latest album Friday, and millions of fans around the world were immediately hooked. (REVIEW: Taylor Swift’s New Album ‘Folklore’ Is An Incredible And Emotional Roller Coaster) In my initial review early Friday morning, I identified a couple songs that stood out, including “Betty” and “The Last Great American Dynasty.” Well, after a solid weekend of beer, margaritas, great food, getting retweeted by the President and listening to “Folklore” several times, I have determined that “The Last Great American Dynasty” is hands down the best track on Swift’s new album. Now, let me...
This year is set to witness the ultimate face-off for the title of ‘Game of the Year.’ On one hand, we have the futuristic open-world experience of Cyberpunk 2077. And on the other, we have a bold and beautifully ambitious ‘The Last of Us 2‘. We have seen the finished product of the latter, and as for the former, we have had a fair few glimpses of it. We have seen what TLoU2 has offered, and have got a general idea of what CP2077 has to offer. These two are arguably the biggest games of the year, and the massive success of TLoU2 does not seem to have even left a dent on the hype around Cyberpunk. Further reading: The...

Like anything adjacent to the active minefield that is the internet, video games tend to create tension at a moment’s notice. But sometimes (maybe more often, but I’m an optimist) they can be a force for good. Such was the focus of this week’s episodes of Speedrun. They function as something of a one-two-three punch of activism, advocating, and awareness within games and the communities surrounding them. On Monday, we sat down with Kahlief Adams, host of the Spawn On Me podcast, to spell out the concrete, actionable ways developers and publishers can make the games industry more inclusive for Black people. While still a matter of funding creators and hiring more Black developers, there’s also the problem of...

(CBSDFW.COM/CNN) – In the past two weeks, the US recorded more than 915,000 new cases of coronavirus — that’s more than the cases reported across the country for the entire month of June. The staggering number signals the US is still far from containing the virus, which is running rampant across American communities, overwhelming hospitals and testing labs. The spread has promised a bleak outlook for the months ahead, according to both health officials and the President. And experts have highlighted the actual number of infections is likely much higher than the reported cases. That comes as some US leaders have now admitted parts of the country reopened too soon. And as they did, residents were too quick to jump...

Twitter believes the perpetrators of last week’s unprecedented attack on the company accessed the direct message (DM) inbox of an elected official in the Netherlands, the company said Wednesday evening. The revelation comes as part of the company’s ongoing investigation into last Thursday’s attack that allowed attackers to hijack the accounts of some of the service’s most high-profile users, including politicians Barack Obama and Joe Biden, to tweet a bitcoin scam. In total, Twitter said it believes attackers accessed the DMs of up to 36 of the 130 targeted accounts, including that elected official. Twitter has “no indication” that other elected officials had their DMs accessed as part of the attack, however. We believe that for up to 36 of...
An eruption of gunfire outside a funeral home that left 15 injured on Chicago's South Side Tuesday was part of an ongoing conflict between rival gang members, police say. Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said the man whose funeral was being held at the time of the incident had been killed in a drive-by shooting last week, in retaliation for a previous shooting. Police said a group of people had gathered outside a funeral home in the Gresham neighborhood Tuesday when three men pulled up in a stolen car and two opened fire.  Mourners at the funeral returned fire, the stolen car crashed a short distance away  and the three occupants fled on foot, police said. The 'vast majority' of recovered coronavirus patients develop antibodies for several months, a new study suggests.  Researchers found that more than 90 percent of people previously infected with COVID-19 developed an immune response that lasted at least 90 days. What's more, most of the patients had levels that not only attached to the virus but neutralized it so the pathogen could not enter and infect human cells.  In a new study from Mount Sinai, researchers found least 92% of recovered coronavirus patients had moderate to high levels of antibodies that attach to the spike protein the virus uses to infect cells (above) About 50% of the low level antibodies were able to neutralizing the virus as did 90% in...
When I see an infected in The Last of Us Part 2, I keep my cool. Even when it’s a jump scare, or an unexpected enemy, I generally know how to deal with most of the things the game makes me kill. Heights, though? Now those make me pause. It’s funny, because I’ve never been particularly scared of heights in video games — most of them make you climb things, tall things. Naughty Dog has an entire franchise predicated on scaling exciting and exotic locations. But when I play as Abby in The Last of Us 2, I’m keenly aware of how high up we go. It’s intentional. Early on, we are informed that Abby, one of the protagonists during...
(CNN) — The end is near for the $600 federal lifeline for millions of unemployed Americans — even though the economy is still far from recovered from the coronavirus pandemic and new layoffs are being announced regularly. Jobless Americans will still get state unemployment benefits, but the sunset of the Congress’ $600 enhancement — part of the $2 trillion economic aid package passed in March — will leave more than 25 million people thousands of dollars poorer each month. It has been called “powerful,” “emotional,” and “iconic.” It might be one of the most famous scenes in an entire generation of video games, often cited in conversations as an example of how the game it comes from is “the height of video game storytelling,” as IGN wrote back in 2013. I speak, of course, of The Last of Us’ giraffe scene, a pivotal animal petting moment that occurs near the end of Naughty Dog’s 2013 post-apocalyptic survival game. As former Naughty Dog level designer Peter Field explained in a breakdown of that part of the game, the bus depot level — and especially the giraffe scene — help Joel understand what a toll the journey has taken on Ellie....
The goal is never be seen, but that’s easier said than done in The Last of Us Part 2. Eventually, an errant Wolf or Seraphite will spot me, or perhaps a zombie saw me shuffling behind some cover. I could fight them all, if I wanted to. But more often than not, I find myself running away. Retreating is definitely not the most courageous option, but it feels like the most humane one, especially when it comes to the game’s dogs. Leaving a body lying around also tends to cause more trouble than it’s worth; another enemy will usually find it and alert their buddies of my transgression. Plus, violent choices usually end with me being mad at myself for...
There’s also a plethora of attack options which are also coded by type. It gets confusing pretty quickly and the tutorial does a poor job of explaining it well, to the point where I was almost done with the game before it actually clicked.  You even gain experience points and level up, with additional abilities you can purchase to assist your verbal sparring. When I played Undertale I was stymied by the bullet hell monster attacks, to the point where I needed to restart the entire game and never actually finished. In Last Word , the mechanics still manage to honor the more strategic and thoughtful turn-based menu systems I’ve come to appreciate (and rely on) in RPGs but yet...

Some of New York City's most iconic boxing gyms have been forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic, and with no official guidance on how they can reopen, many gym owners fear the city will forever lose this sporting legacy, writes Ben Wyatt. Decades of receding sea ice in the Arctic have brought about an unexpected increase in the region's phytoplankton population. In a new paper, researchers from Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences found that Arctic phytoplankton populations increased 57% between 1998 and 2018. The team claim their findings mark a 'significant regime change' for the region that will help absorb carbon dioxide from the rapidly warming region. Researchers from Stanford found that phytoplankton populations in the Arctic had increased 57% between 1998 and 2018 'We knew the Arctic had increased production in the last few years, but it seemed possible the system was just recycling the same store of nutrients,' Stanford's Kevin Arrigo told Stanford News. (CBS Local)– There are over 50 million people in the United States living with environmental illness. As Oliver Broudy discovered in his Simon & Schuster book “The Sensitives: The Rise Of Environmental Illness And The Search For America’s Last Pure Place,” chemicals can impact people who suffer from EI in many different ways. Some people with this illness are smell sensitive to things like perfume and bleach, while others need to live in the woods in order to avoid any chemicals in their lives. Broudy went on a cross country trip with one man who suffers from environmental illness and met many others in order to write this book. “I got exposed to this world in the summer of 2016 and...
