Nevada lawmakers passed legislation on Saturday that would ban chokeholds in the state. The bill, passed by the state Assembly over the weekend, would also codify a “duty to intervene” for police witnessing colleague misconduct, The Associated Press reported. The measure would permit “only the amount of reasonable force necessary” to make an arrest. The measure passed the chamber 38-4 with bipartisan support and is set for a Senate vote in the days ahead, according to the AP. A separate state bill introduced Saturday would partially undo a 2019 law increasing legal protections for officers accused of misconduct, the AP noted. Among its provisions, it restricts plaintiffs’ ability to use officer testimony during departmental misconduct investigations. It also requires police departments...

A New York Times survey of 270 U.S. colleges and universities has uncovered 6,600 COVID-19 infections among students and staff and 14 coronavirus-related deaths. Hundreds of the almost 1,000 schools the newspaper contacted did not reply to the questions. The statistics do not include numbers for the fall semester that has already started at some schools. “This data, which is almost certainly an undercount, shows the risks colleges face as they prepare for a school year in the midst of a pandemic,” the newspaper said. American educators are cobbling together a hodgepodge of plans on how best to protect students and staff from the virus. Some have taken all classes online, while other have a mixture of online and in-class...
OAKLAND (KPIX) — The city of Oakland said it was going to get serious about enforcing rules for sidewalk vendors at Lake Merritt amid fears that large weekend gatherings could be responsible for the spread of the novel coronavirus. LAS VEGAS — Last weekend was a nice appetizer for sports bettors with the start of the pandemic-shortened MLB season, but we’ll be gorging ourselves this weekend on an all-you-can-bet buffet of sports as the NBA and NHL restart their 2019-20 campaigns. From all reports, it appears the “winter sports” (which are used to being confined indoors) have done a better job with their “bubble” approach in Orlando for the NBA and Toronto and Edmonton for the NHL (and the WNBA’s “wubble” in Bradenton, Fla.) than the open-door policy of MLB. But despite the things MLB has done wrong, bettors still can learn from what happened in its opening week. For starters, home-field advantage doesn’t matter as much without...

Barry Trotz knows that there’s no time to waste in a best-of-five play-in series. That’s why the Islanders head coach said he is prepared to make quick adjustments to his lineup should his team fall behind early in the qualifying round against the Florida Panthers. “You’re probably a little quicker on the trigger [to make lineup changes] than you will through maybe a seven-game series or during the regular season,” Trotz said on a Zoom call Saturday. “It all depends on what you have, it might be a systematical adjustment that can correct what’s not going right or it could be a player adjustment. “I think you don’t have much time, you don’t have that extra life, you get...

Denny McCarthy stepped onto the tee box Saturday morning at TPC Twin Cities, pounded his ball 254 yards down the left side of the fairway, and immediately started walking. All by himself. While everyone else playing at the 3M Open spent their round with at least one other golfer, and most played with two others, McCarthy was the loneliest man on the golf course. That’s been a common trend for McCarthy after testing positive for COVID-19 last month. While he continued to test positive until last weekend, McCarthy was allowed to return to play after 10 days of isolation under the current PGA Tour health and safety policy. The only catch was McCarthy either had to play by himself or...
