The supervisors voted to observe Kobe Bryant Day at the request of board Chairwoman Michelle Steel, a lifelong Lakers fan. She said Bryant, who lived with his family in Newport Beach, was a “treasured member of our community” who “inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up.” Orange County follows the Los Angeles City Council, which designated the same date as Kobe Bryant Day...

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) — Orange County health officials reported seven additional COVID-19 fatalities Friday hiking the death toll to 704. The county also announced 43 new diagnoses of coronavirus According to Orange County County Executive Officer Frank Kim, the low number of cases is undoubtedly due to the state’s recent glitch in reporting positive tests from laboratories. Since the start of the pandemic, 280 skilled nursing facility residents have died of COVID-19 in Orange County and 35 assisted living facility residents have succumbed to the virus. Orange County reported an additional seven COVID-19 fatalities Friday, pushing the region’s total death toll past 700. While a far cry from the record 32 deaths reported Thursday, the latest fatalities demonstrate that the novel coronavirus is continuing to take a toll on the county, even as officials weigh whether to reopen some schools for in-person instruction. A frustration of late in that regard, for Orange County and across the state, has been significant issues with the CalREDIE electronic system, which collects information from laboratories and feeds it to state and local health departments. A series of data failures have created a backlog of as many as 300,000 test results, the state said Friday, and left counties in the...

The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, Aug. 5, blocked a lower court order that the Orange County jail system practice social distancing, distribute hand sanitizer and keep the facilities clean to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Justices voted 5-4 to stay the earlier order issued by U.S. District Judge Jesus G. Bernal against Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes. The sheriff asked for an emergency appeal after Bernal ruled in May that Barnes had been inconsistent in following federal guidelines to protect jail inmates from the spread of coronavirus. Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg offered a dissenting opinion Wednesday. “This Court normally does not reward bad behavior, and certainly not with extraordinary equitable relief,” they wrote. “The injunction’s requirements...

As Poseidon Water pursues the final government approvals needed to build one of the country’s biggest seawater desalination plants, the company still cannot definitively say who will buy the 50 million gallons a day of drinking water it wants to produce on the Orange County coast. That’s one of several questions that continue to dog the $1-billion Huntington Beach project as Poseidon tries to seal an iron-clad deal more than two decades after it first proposed the ocean desalter. During two long days of online hearings last week, members of a regional board that is about to vote on a key Poseidon permit challenged proponents on a number of fronts. They wondered whether Orange County needs the costly supply....
SANTA ANA (CBSLA) — Orange County health officials reported 12 additional coronavirus-related deaths and 65 more cases Wednesday. To date, the county’s totals now stand at 38,131 coronavirus cases and 665 deaths. According to Orange County County Executive Officer Frank Kim, the low number of cases is undoubtedly due to the state’s recent glitch in reporting positive tests from laboratories. “There’s no way our numbers would drop that fast,” Kim said. “Out of 5,000 new tests, that’s incredibly low.” State officials have directed laboratories to send manual copies of test results as a backup until the software glitch is corrected, he said. Sixteen deaths have been reported in Orange County since Sunday. The county logged 87 coronavirus deaths last week...
SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – The U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday lifted court orders directing the sheriff of Orange County to adopt safety measures to curb coronavirus cases in four county jail facilities. Since March, nearly 500 inmates in Orange County have tested positive for COVID-19. This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — For many renters, it is welcome news that rent prices are starting to get lower and lower in Los Angeles and Orange County after nearly 10 years of rent hikes. The reason for the drop in costs is the pandemic, but some experts say the effects could be here to stay. A trend Brian Griffin, a realtor with Compass Real Estate, identified during this pandemic is that people are opting to leave L.A. for more affordable cities and to be closer to family, or to purchase property instead. “We’re actually seeing people moving out of the apartments and condos and they are purchasing something, which is actually driving the strong housing market here in L.A. and...

The day was fading fast in Laguna Beach, where people often gather at the water’s edge to celebrate gauzy, pink-toned sunsets. At Heisler Park, my wife and I found a nice perch to take it all in, and watched as a nearby gathering of people grew in numbers, with lawn chairs neatly arranged and a food buffet table set up. “This is my sister,” one man said, introducing a late arrival to the others in the group. There were elbow bumps and cordial greetings, and the sister took a seat inches from another person. Soon, about 10 or 12 people had gathered. It was a lovely scene, friends and family enjoying each other’s company on a pleasant eve to take...
