SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- We've all heard the devastating stories about children dying after they've been left inside a parked car on a hot day.RELATED: Heat stroke or heat exhaustion: Do you know the difference?According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 700 children left in cars died from heatstroke from 1998 to 2016. And of those deaths, 376 were children "forgotten" by a caregiver. No child should die this way! The obvious worry is that losing Apple as gatekeeper would erode the protections that iOS is famous for. People buy iPhones because Apple promises to keep your data private, a promise that Google cannot match given the nature of its business and its operating system. Would breaking the App Store render iOS as insecure and prone to malware as Android? Not according to Yair Ivnitsky, a mobile developer at cybersecurity company GK8. He said that App Store review, where the company vets apps before they’re added to the store, is only one of a number of ways that Apple secures the iPhone. And that, broadly speaking, in the highly unlikely event that the iOS was opened up, users wouldn’t be at...
With California schools starting up again virtually, many parents are wondering how they can get back — or stay — at work if their kids can’t physically go back to class. It’s not a one-size-fits-all conundrum. Two-parent households of means might be able to work from home and take turns helping kids navigate distance learning or hire a tutor. A single parent who is an essential worker might find herself with fewer options. Daniel Alvarez, who works in a food facility, said he isn’t sure how his family is going to manage his two school-age kids’ studies when his wife is finally able to return to her job as a hair stylist. “What do we do?” Alvarez said recently...

The NBA bubble is getting an Instaban. Ahead of the arrival of league-sanctioned guests, the NBA will begin requiring players to prove “long-standing relationships” with non-family members, according to a memo obtained by ESPN. The league and players agreed to keep causal acquaintances — “known by the player only through social media or an intermediary” — from joining the Disney-based bubble, meaning that any sliding in the DMs stops there. Casual acquaintances “could create problems within your team – and maybe someone else’s too,” one GM told ESPN. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The climb up the ladder positioned against a gate outside the Phillies’ ballpark nearly 450 yards away from home plate comes with more than a distant view of baseball. The move comes a month after activists resurrected the decades-long conflict over the 1,400-acre Foothills Park, a massive nature preserve believed to be the only publicly owned park in California that excludes non-residents unless they’re guests accompanied by Palo Altans. In settling on a compromise between those who believe the restrictions are discriminatory and others who think opening it up to more visitors threatens the park’s ecosystem, the city council this week also set out plans to put the issue to voters in 2022 —...

That’s because most of the studies he’s seen show that the disease is far more dangerous indoors that it is in an open-air stadium. “It’s all a question of distance,” DeWine said. “One of the things you would worry about with football, frankly,...

This weekend, the Woodland Hills church also held Mass outside to allow congregants to enjoy some fresh air and resume worship in a way that’s allowed. California Gov. Since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the United States, immigrant communities have been among those most impacted. This week, reporting by Prism senior reporter Tina Vasquez uncovered that the lauded immigration attorney entrusted with representing detained migrant children has spent years advocating for a policy that now forces a cruel “binary choice” on parents detained with their children: keep their family together in facilities where a deadly virus is spreading, or send their children away. That policy, known as “Family Separation 2.0,” represents just one of many ways longstanding immigration policy issues have collided with the pandemic to generate new challenges not only for those in detention, but for immigrant communities around the country. In case you missed it,...

Healthcare workers move a patient in the COVID-19 Unit at United Memorial Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Until this week, hospitals across the nation sent their data each day to the National Healthcare Safety Network. There had been some complaints about this network—mostly that it was unforgiving when it came to the data format and didn’t provide flexibility for capturing additional information. But that information fed dashboards at the CDC, which provided information not just on the number of confirmed cases and deaths, but on the rates of hospitalization and number of available beds. On Thursday morning, that site temporarily vanished. Then it returned, featuring data from … last week. The change in where and how hospitals report data, backed up by Donald...
