Barr "explains that no simple possession offense in Colorado makes a green-card holder deportable," says Hans Meyer, the Denver immigration lawyer who litigated the case for three years. "That’s really important, because the immigration courts were getting the analysis wrong for years." "Decisions like this are usually a big deal for Coloradans trying to avoid deportation on those specific grounds," explains Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy counsel at the American Immigration Council.Related Stories Repealing Trump's Travel Ban Is Personal for Joe Neguse Denver Won't Appeal...

The murder of George Floyd unleashed a wave of protests, reforms and even electoral promises in the United States that focused on the police, but do not seem to have yet reached the other pillar that supports structural racism: the penal system. Floyd was killed when he was arrested for allegedly trying to pay with a fake $ 20 bill in Minneapolis, and his death has already caused major changes to the Police Department and its funding. But police officers are just the main link in a racist system that defines and limits the lives of much of the African-American community in Minnesota. “Minnesota has the worst sentencing disparity in the country. You take two people with the same...

An appellate court in Florida recently decided that a police officer who sees a firearm when approaching a citizen is not permitted to rely exclusively on the possession of the firearm as the justification for an investigatory stop and search. Bearing arms is not only a lawful activity, it is “a specifically enumerated right” protected under both the state and federal constitutions. Taking into consideration the sheer number of persons in the state who are permitted to carry concealed weapons, this “potentially lawful activity cannot be the sole basis for a detention. If this were allowed, the Fourth Amendment would be eviscerated.” The background of the ruling was a stop and arrest made by Deputy Beach of the Escambia County, Florida Sheriff’s Office....
