SAN ANTONIO – An arson investigation is underway after a vacant building went up in flames on the North Side, according to San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of N. Flores Street. Witness Margo Solomon said she saw smoke and flames coming from the building when the fire started and thought someone may be stuck inside. She pulled over her vehicle, notified 911 and tried to kick open the door with no success. The fire department arrived in just minutes and by the time of their arrival, the entire building was on fire. Most of the damage in the building was on the back left side. Although the building is vacant,...
Three hip-hoppers walk into a bar: a white rapper, a Black DJ and a mixed-race beatmaker who is also a woman. When Idris Goodman’s play, Hype Man — which chronicles that scenario in which the trio locks horns over issues of sexism, racism and social justice — began hitting stages nationally in 2017, no one could have predicted the police murder of George Floyd or the ensuing surge of the Black Lives Matter movement and dialogue about racism in 2020. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic turned life upside down and closed hundreds of theaters down, Kevin Marchman of the local community-driven Black Actors Guild saw Hype Man as an opportunity that couldn’t wait for current social distancing protocols to pass. In the middle...
Q: In preparation to sell our home, we learned that the roof needs to be removed and replaced. We bought our house right before the Great Recession in a hot real estate market, devoid of inspections or contingencies. Now that we are becoming sellers, our seller’s agent insisted we obtain pre-listing reports from local inspectors. We had no idea what was going on in the crawl space or in the attic. In other words, there are three roofs on our house designed for the weight of one. So we hired one firm to tear off the old roofing shingles, another to reroof, and a third to replace the downspouts and gutters. These firms acquired the proper building permits online. However,...
“Given the fact that this is a show basically made from start to finish in Unreal, you can see why Epic perked their ears up,” Mirabello said. “They were pretty intrigued, also because there’s no video content. You know that 90-second trailer that you saw? This entire episode is actually a smaller download footprint than a 4K version of the trailer we played.” Mirabello didn’t divulge details about the deal between Epic and Terrible Posture, but said it was a new way of handling indie publishing. “The way that this is being delivered is definitely a different approach to how games are built, how they’re funded and what their goals are,” he said. “With that said, the mission statement of...
Stephen Miller, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, told Breitbart News on Tuesday that President Trump saved the city of Portland, Oregon. President Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to send in around 100 Federal Protective Service (FPS) agents to defend the federal courthouse that had been under siege for two months by violent anarchists who were intending to destroy the building. Miller, in an appearance on Breitbart News Tonight on SiriusXM 125 the Patriot Channel on Tuesday evening, made the case that the Trump administration’s actions have officially quelled the violence of the “riotous mob” by stopping those rioters from setting off a chain reaction of events that would have led to more destruction beyond  the...

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that authorities had charged Schinzing with "using fire to maliciously damage or destroy the Justice Center in downtown Portland." Fox News media analyst Howard Kurtz said on Wednesday that “too many in the media are greatly downplaying the severity of the violence during the protests in Portland." “What’s really striking is that the overwhelming focus of the Trump-obsessed media is over the president’s tactics and combating the violence to a point that it is almost reducing the violence itself to a footnote,” the "MediaBuzz" host told “America’s Newsroom.” Kurtz said that protesters are “throwing bottles, aiming lasers, hurling fireworks and fires." “That should be equally part of the story,” Kurtz said. CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s birth place for tens of thousands of Chicagoans. A building so famous, it was even home to a hit TV show. But now, the old Cook County Hospital has been repurposed as a hotel. CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole got a first look inside. How many people can proudly say they were born at Cook County Hospital?  Thousands. The building was falling apart. Its roof famously leaking, squatters broke in. Today,  it’s impressive on the inside, but it’s on the outside where it really shines. Its nickname was Chicago’s Ellis Island, providing medical care often to citizens without means, but by the early 2000’s Cook County Hospital was a historic but empty aging structure From the street it’s...

While Republican senators were introducing their respective pieces of the new “coronavirus relief” bill Mitch McConnell has cooked up, called the HEALS Act (Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection, and Schools), Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows were meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer “to begin formal negotiations,” which really shows where the power to pass the new bill lies. Because what McConnell offered up is beyond ridiculous and doesn’t even have the support of probably half of his conference. It has the support of absolutely no Democrats. Sen. Bernie Sanders summed up just how dead on arrival it is in a tweet detailing what’s in it: $2 billion for F-35s, $1.75 billion...

Donald Trump praises Roger Ailes for building a 'miracle' at Fox News in a new, glowing documentary about the late, disgraced CEO who died in 2017 after leaving the network amid a flurry of sexual harassment claims.   The documentary, Man in the Arena, was released on Amazon Prime on Friday and features favorable commentary from President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Mitch McConnell, Newt Gingrich and Ailes' widow, Elizabeth.  It is narrated by Jon Voight and offers a far more complimentary view of Ailes than any of the films, series or documentaries that have previously been made about his life.  In it, Elizabeth Ailes - who was affectionately known as Beth to her late husband - defends him against the sexual harassment...

Here is what Joe Judge does not want to hear as his players gather — as socially distant as possible, of course — for the first time: “Hello, stranger.’’ The best teams are the most cohesive teams, and cohesion is born out of familiarity. All this is counterintuitive amid a pandemic, and all this is exactly what falls at the feet of Judge, a first-time head coach thrown into the deep end of the NFL pool at age 38. All spring and summer, he has created, adjusted, scrapped, recreated, readjusted and re-scrapped schedules for his team. Coaches have a thing for their schedules — the where, when and how — and everything Judge thought out in painstaking detail was predicated...

Architecture experts seemed shocked, when Trump Tower opened in 1983, to find that its six-story, brass-and-marble-encrusted shopping atrium was actually pretty tasteful. Paul Goldberger, the New York Times‘ architecture critic, wrote that “the atrium of Trump Tower may well be the most pleasant interior public space to be completed in New York in some years. It is warm, luxurious and even exhilarating.” He even praised the color of the marble—”a mixture...

(CBS Local)– From the moment he became a presidential candidate, President Donald J. Trump has made border control and immigration two of his biggest talking points. He had purchased a series of elegant but old buildings overlooking Central Park in New York, hoping to quickly demolish them and erect new, glitzy replacements where he could charge sky-high rent. But one of them, 100 Central Park South, was filled with tenants who had no interest in giving up their rent-controlled apartments, and Trump was having a hard time convincing them to leave. The problem was of his own making. “I didn’t fully understand until much later…that it’s almost impossible to legally vacate a building filled with rent-controlled and rent-stabilized apartments,” he noted...

Marc Levoy, the researcher who used software to turn Google’s Pixel camera into a powerhouse, has joined Adobe to build a universal camera app, Adobe announced today. Levoy headed up the team that developed the impressive computational photography technology used in Google’s Pixel smartphones, including features like Night Sight, Portrait Mode, and HDR+. His work also helped Pixels take great photos without requiring as much hardware as competing phones — the Pixel line famously only needed a single camera to stay competitive with Apple’s iPhones, until a desire for sharper zoom images pushed Google to add a second, telephoto lens with last year’s Pixel 4. (The first iPhone with a second lens, the iPhone X, came out in 2017.) Levoy’s...

Henry Cavill, fresh off the success of The Witcher, has been rather productive throughout the past four months (and counting) of quarantine. He’s painting Warhammer 40,000 miniature figures, he’s honing in on his cooking and baking skills, dabbling in some storytelling, and now he’s built himself a gaming PC. Hide On paper, while building a computer from the ground up sounds fascinating, it doesn’t really scream “must-watch entertainment.” However, if you mix Cavill, some weather-appropriate tank tops, lightly self-deprecating commentary, and set the entire thing to Barry White, that all can change very quickly. And Cavill seems to be more than aware of how it might be perceived. Hide View this post on Instagram This kind of material isnt...

Around 1877, Carleton Watkins loaded his mule-drawn wagon with a hefty glass-plate camera and bulky processing equipment and headed out from San Francisco. He was a man with a plan. The first artist of international stature to emerge in California, he intended to photograph the 21 Franciscan missions of Alta California, built a century before when the state was a remote province of New Spain. He ended up shooting 17, most represented with multiple views. Among them was Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, an imposing edifice in what is now Alhambra, just east of Cal State Los Angeles — towns whose names underscore the region’s Spanish ancestry. The mission, founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1771 for the forced colonial indoctrination...

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ big summer update invites you to suit up and swim into the depths, and while you can use the pier or walk into the ocean, some intrepid players want to dive with a little more style. For these fans, ambiance is just as important as the gameplay mechanic. Many folks are building specialized diving areas where they can cannonball into the water. The most popular technique involves building a wooden ramp, or a cliff, which can provide the necessary height for a nice dive. These diving spots are usually decorated with nautical items, such as diving suits, surfboards, fish statues, and water-themed patterns. For example, it’s pretty common to see swimming signs near diving spots —...

Kayla Gore’s initial idea was to build some single residential units in the garden of My Sistah’s House, which provides emergency housing for trans and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people in Memphis, and which predominantly serves trans women of color. Gore, the organization’s co-founder and executive director, wanted these so-called “tiny homes” to be temporary safe spaces to be used while residents found full-time homes. Then Gore had another idea: to build a small community in Memphis with 20 homes to house trans women of color, who, said Gore, are at higher risk of violence and discrimination when attempting to access housing. The land on which to build those homes has now been found next to the Loosahatchie...
“Look, what beautiful stables!” library director Salih Şahin says with a laugh, the sweep of his hand taking in a scene with nary a trace of hay or manure. Instead of stamping, whinnying steeds, the airy, light-filled chamber is lined with long, gleaming-white study desks. The smooth stone walls and pillars of this grand reading room support a series of graceful arches and ceiling domes that almost float overhead, delicately painted with intricate floral and geometric designs. It’s hard to find any building in Istanbul that doesn’t have a past life or three, and the early 16th-century structures of the Beyazıt State Library and Manuscript Library—the latest selection for The Daily Beast’s monthly series, The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries—are no...
