Donald Trump has a habit of talking about women as objects that he's just certain is appealing to them, even when he's trying to flatter them. It's perhaps most obvious when he's trash talking women, which, truth be told, really brings him a thrill.  "AOC, that’s a real beauty, isn’t it?” Trump said during an appearance in Ohio last week. It was a twofer, using both 'that' and 'it' as pronouns to refer to a woman—Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, in that case.  But objectification is clearly Trump's highest form of flattery too. Though his initial appeal to "The Suburban Housewives of America" last month drew attention for its distinctly anachronistic Leave It to Beaver flare, Trump really upped...
(CBS Baltimore) — Sedgefield Country Club, in Greensboro, North Carolina, is home to the Wyndham Championship, the last PGA Tour event of this abbreviated season before the FedExCup Playoffs. Sedgefield has been a regular Tour stop since 2008. But its relationship with professional golf, not to mention its rich history, dates back much further. Sedgefield Country Club formed in 1925, around the time famed course architect Donald Ross drew up sketches of his next masterpiece. Ross’s courses use the natural topography to help dictate the path of the course and play on it. They work on a sort of risk-reward system, challenging players to be a little aggressive and then offering scoring opportunities if they succeed. Sedgefield was no different. (Ross...
For The Daily Beast's membership drive, we're asking our reporters and editors to tell the stories behind some of their biggest stories. Barely a year into this administration, when the two of us—Daily Beast investigative reporter Lachlan Markay and White House correspondent Asawin Suebsaeng—were first approached to write a book on the era of President and racist game-show host Donald J. Trump, we were asked if we wanted to co-author something on the “adults in the room.” This meant: the president’s lieutenants who encouraged stability and maintained a respectable moral code against the backdrop and foreground of Trump’s tumult, vulgarity, and omnishambles. (Think: your Rex Tillersons, your John Kellys, your James Mattises… I guess.) We politely turned down the assignment...

A Christian reverend who claims to have nearly a decade of experience exorcising demons says the that the classic 1973 horror film The Exorcist is scarily accurate in its portrayals of demonic expulsions. Reverend Bill Bean claims he has witnessed levitations, bizarre displays of superhuman strength and has even seen people’s entire eyes change color during his seven years in the business of exorcism. ‘I’ve actually seen people levitate,’ he told the UK news outlet, the DailyStar. ‘I’ve seen their eyes change from our regular-looking eyes to either all-white or all-black – red in one case.’ A number of the disturbing paranormal experiences allegedly witnessed by Bean draw a similarity between some of The Exorcist's most famous scenes. He insists the...

Has Rob Zombie directed “The Secret Garden”? Sure, the 1911 book’s roots lie in gothic literature, shrouded in gloom, but I have never watched an adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel and repeatedly thought, “Is someone going to get murdered?!” Until now. Everything screams horror. The giant Yorkshire manse that the orphaned Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx) arrives to from India looks not like it’s haunted by a tragic past, but as if Ryan Murphy is about to begin a shoot with Jessica Lange and a wacky serial killer. There are several actual ghosts. Driving the dinginess off a cliff, director Marc Munden’s indoor visuals are low-budget Guillermo del Toro, dimly lit and cavernous, only without much texture, detail or character....
Sign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York City BY MOLLY GIVEN ‘The Secret Garden’ is one of those stories that is so timeless and so poignant, that over the course of a century, the classic tale has been remade for both the screen and the stage more times than most can count. However, in Marc Munden’s latest version of the tale adapted by Jack Thorne, the story does feel a bit updated—but in a way that teaches both children and adults. 2020’s ‘The Secret Garden’ still showcases the classic story written in 1911 by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but also throws audiences right front and center into the mind of...
The Duchess of Cambridge has been praised for 'nailing the mask makeup look' during appearances this week as she donned face coverings in public for the first time. Kate Middleton, 38, has appeared effortlessly glamorous while sporting the £15 reusable cotton floral face mask from London-based label Amaia on visits in Sheffield and Wales over the last few days. Many famous chefs have put their own spins on the Negroni. Ethan Miller /GettyImages / Getty Images/Jemal Countess / Paige Bennett for Insider I made Negroni cocktails using recipes from famous chefs Guy Fieri, Rachael Ray, Marcus Samuelsson, and Valerie Bertinelli. Fieri's and Bertinelli's recipes were too bitter for my liking, but they're sure to be hits for those who like their drinks not-so-sweet. Samuelsson's Negroni was the most time-consuming to make, but the bourbon element of it was pretty tasty.  Ray's Negroni was my favorite because it felt unique and refreshing with its sweet, citrus-forward flavors. If you’ve ever wondered how Nintendo’s classic games evolved before they reached store shelves, you might have a good chance to find out. According to VGC, (via Eurogamer) a “gigaleak” of Nintendo art assets and source code from the mid-1990s has surfaced online, revealing prototypes of games that looked and behaved quite differently than the final products. Yoshi’s Island (above) had a different interface, music and mini games, while Super Mario Kart had no drifting. Even the once-abandoned Star Fox 2 (eventually released with the SNES Classic Edition) was going to have a human pilot at one stage. Other tidbits include alternate artwork from Super Mario World (Bowser might have had visible legs) and “Zelda 3,” a very early engine...

In my opinion, the most overlooked genre of footwear is the sandal. Not only are sandals perfect for summer, I think you can and should get away wearing them anytime it’s not raining. Sandals are comfortable, there is room for your feet to breathe, and better yet, the design of them is pretty outstanding. While you might love your Birks, there’s another sandal I love for outdoor adventures or just everyday use that is well worth the investment: the Chaco  While the Chaco is a more outdoorsy shoe than other sandals, it has unrivaled versatility, comfort, and is the most durable sandal I’ve ever come across. I’ve been wearing mine for years and while they’re torn in some places, they...

People often blame bad things on Hollywood and video games, but now there’s something very good that they’re responsible for. The new Toyota Supra exists in large part because the model has been kept alive for the past two decades on the big screen and in cyberspace. (Toyota) Toyota stopped selling the last Supra in the U.S. in 1998 and globally in 2002, but its omnipresence in films like the “Fast and Furious” franchise and various racing simulators has been building its legend among younger enthusiasts and keeping the faithful engaged ever since. Resurrecting the name was an easy call when Toyota decided to bring a new high-end sports car to the lineup. It didn’t do it alone. Toyota...

Thank you SKYY® for partnering with Half Full on the Bartenders At Home cocktail video series. What inspired you to create this cocktail? “A Bee’s Knees is a drink that I recommend for folks that are interested in making simple yet delicious cocktails at home. It’s three ingredients that most folks have at home or can easily go to the store to buy. The one element that I think most at home cocktails lack is texture, so I wanted to bring a beautiful roundness and mouthfeel to the drink. What better way to do that than the trendy dairy alternative oat milk! In addition to raising the velvety texture, the oats provide a nice shortbread, almost buttery flavor to the...

Mary Elizabeth Williams July 11, 2020 9:25PM (UTC) I don't know how your Fourth of July went this year. Mine was definitely a bust, but our American Independence Day has never been a great personal favorite. I prefer to use July to unleash my francophile side and go all in on Bastille Day. A month in France as a high school exchange student left me with a permanent sense of entitlement about crossing my sevens and zees, plus a fascination with the French Revolution. TL;DR — the establishment of a republic did not go off without a hitch. Yet the storming of the Bastille remains a symbolic moment in the history of liberty. It was an act of protest against unjust detainment...

Audible’s exclusive audiobook version of The Sandman is a well-produced, fascinating experiment. That’s fitting, given that the original story — a comics series about the king of Dreams — was also a weird experiment. Back in 1988, up-and-coming comics writer Neil Gaiman was offered the chance to reboot the Sandman, a classic DC Comics superhero who never quite made it big. The resulting juggernaut of a series, illustrated by more than two dozen artists over seven years, was a masterclass in mythopoetic storytelling, with barely any superheroes in it at all. The Audible version is a remarkably faithful adaptation that keeps virtually every line of dialogue and narration from the first three volumes of The Sandman, while adding...

Mary Elizabeth Williams June 27, 2020 8:59PM (UTC) This is the time of year that the worn out phrase "seasonal eating" really means something. I've just passed through a springtime of ramps and rhubarb mania — I even snagged a few fiddleheads in there — and have now settled in to my annual blur of strategic thinking around strawberries and stone fruits. When it's time for real corn and tomatoes, I plan to go absolutely bonkers. Yet even I know that despite what it says in Ecclesiastes, there really doesn't have to be a season for everything. And I don't see any reason to confine the greatest of cakes, gingerbread, to the holidays. I would rather eat gingerbread than almost anything else...

The first $20,000 went quickly. Charles Webb simply just gave it all away, along with the VIP passes for the premiere of “The Graduate,” the soon-to-be Hollywood classic based on his book. Though Webb kept on writing — sometimes to acclaim, sometimes not — he lived in poverty, a life choice he made by giving away his earnings, his inheritance and the occasional house he bought. After giving away the $20,000 he received for the film rights to “The Graduate,” he gave the copyright for the novel to the Anti-Defamation League, only because he admired the group’s work. “When you run out of money, it’s a purifying experience,” he told the Times of London after he abruptly left Los Angeles...

Business Insider Although Mulan is the only Disney Princess of East Asian descent, the original Mulan cartoon was a massive flop in China. Disney pulled out all the stops to make the movie a hit and even had Jackie Chan perform "I'll Make a Man Out of You." However, while government restrictions and Disney's history of releasing films not aligned with Chinese politics didn't help, one of the main reasons "Mulan" bombed at the box office was because audiences thought Mulan was too "foreign-looking." The worldwide release of 2020's live-action remake of "Mulan" was postponed until July 24 due to the coronavirus, but the film has already been met with controversy. Disney+ has shared the first trailer for their Into The Unknown: Making Frozen 2 series. The six-part docuseries takes viewers behind-the-scenes to see the incredible work that went on to bring the sequel to life on the big screen. Disney knew they had to make Frozen 2 after the success of the first installment, which was the easy part. Making it was going to be a lot harder since there was so much more pressure to get it right, which the trailer details. With the clock ticking and less than a year until the world premiere of Frozen 2, the filmmakers, artists, songwriters and cast open their doors to cameras for a six-part documentary series to reveal the hard...
A new trailer for the 4K restoration of RAD has been released. Utopia Distribution partnered with Vinegar Syndrome to bring the 80s cult classic to the modern age, as it had largely been lost to time in many ways. The movie hadn’t officially been made available on disc and certainly hadn’t been given an HD update. That has been amended, as this trailer reveals that it has been brought back to life and will be available on digital platforms next month. The trailer gives a general overview of the plot, which sees an underdog BMX rider looking to compete in a notorious race. It largely focuses on the stunt riding and tricks that have helped to make the movie...
What inspired you to create this cocktail? “Tasting the rich notes imparted by the barrel finish of the Jose Cuervo® Tradicional® Añejo Tequila, I immediately thought of after-dinner possibilities. I settled on a fusion of a Manhattan riff with the oft-forgotten tequila drink, the Brave Bull, which combines the flavors of tequila with those of coffee. I named it, according to the conventions of such variations, after the neighborhood in Guadalajara—Monumental—where the bullfighting ring stands.” When would you serve this drink? “Definitely designed to be served as an after-dinner cocktail, it’s perfect for sitting back with some classy and atmospheric music.” What music would you pair it with? “Ideally, tune the radio to a local classical or jazz station—there’s something...
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) — Chris Kirk won the Korn Ferry Tour’s King & Bear Classic on Saturday at World Golf Village, a year after taking a leave of absence from the PGA Tour to fight alcohol abuse and depression. “It gives me a deeper sense of appreciation and gratitude for everything. I’m a completely different person than I was two years ago,” Kirk said. “I can’t wait to get home tonight and give my wife and three boys a hug and that’s what I care more about now. It’s amazing seeing the complete shift in my mentality as far as that’s concerned.” Kirk birdied the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 67 and a one-stroke victory over Justin Lower...
Pretty in Pink is one of John Hughes’ early hits and, much like his other cinematic creations, it has managed to endure in the pop culture landscape. In this case, for nearly three and a half decades. Directed by Howard Deutch, the movie helped to cement the icon Hughes would become. It also included a stacked cast led by Molly Ringwald full of future stars, including Jon Cryer, James Spader, Andrew McCarthy and the late Harry Dean Stanton, among others. The movie has also remained popular enough to make the jump to various forms of home media over the years. Case in point, Paramount Pictures has just released a brand new Blu-ray of Pretty in Pink. This latest release was...
Braveheart is a stone-cold Hollywood classic by virtually any definition. Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Randall Wallace, the blockbuster was released in 1995 and almost instantly cemented itself as a memorable piece of cinematic history. The epic tale of William Wallace and the liberation of Scotland from the English went on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, in addition to becoming a box office smash. Paramount Pictures is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the movie by releasing a new Blu-ray steelbook which is hitting shelves on June 16. I was lucky enough to speak with Randall Wallace in honor of the upcoming Braveheart release. We discussed the movie’s legacy all these years later, how he and...
Thank you Wild Turkey® for partnering with Half Full on the Bartenders At Home cocktail video series. What inspired you to create this cocktail? “My appetite! It’s summer in New Orleans and it’s getting pretty warm. My favorite thing to do is barbecue with friends and family in the park or at the lake, but because of social distancing that won’t happen anytime soon. I love to drink a chilled glass of whiskey with my BBQ. So, I thought to myself, why not combine both into one equally appetizing and delicious cocktail?” When would you serve this drink? “I’d serve this drink on a hot summer day. It’s a good cocktail for porch sitting or general partying outdoors.” What music...
Thank you Campari® for partnering with Half Full on the Bartenders At Home cocktail video series. What inspired you to create this cocktail? “I’ve been using cocktail hour as an official end to the work day, because it’s hard to separate the two when working from home.” When would you serve this drink? “I would either make this drink as a dessert or I would make it around 5 PM as you officially clock out of work from home.” What music would you pair it with? “I have been living on D-Nice’s Instagram for his club quarantine, it is great for some good kitchen dancing while fixing up a cocktail!” What food would you pair it with? “I would not...

George Steinbrenner made his fortune in shipbuilding, and earned his fame in baseball. But in his heart of hearts, what Steinbrenner always yearned to be was a showman, a Broadway impresario, a little bit P.T. Barnum, a little bit George M. Cohan. The Yankees were his life, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” his muse. “From the first day he owned the team he wanted to make the Stadium experience fun from start to finish,” says Marty Appel, who spent some time as a Yankee PR man early in Steinbrenner’s tenure and is now one of the encyclopedic authorities of Yankees history. “One of his partners was James Nederlander [producer of ‘La Cage Aux Folles,’ among many others]. He loved everything about New...

Nineties kids, rejoice: After 10 years, The Pokémon Company announced that another Pokémon Snap is finally in the works. Beloved by countless millennials (and Pokémon lovers of all ages), the original Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo 64 put players on a tranquil railcar driving through nature, where a diversity of Pokémon prance or fly by. The objective was simple: Snap pictures of the Pokémon, which Professor Oak judged on a point system based on the size of the Pokémon in the photo, its pose, and your photographic technique. Part of the fun was tossing apples at the Pokémon to grab their attention long enough to capture their visage. The upcoming version for the Nintendo Switch, succinctly titled New Pokémon Snap,...
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” was released 60 years ago today, and though it is considered by many, including me, to be the greatest horror movie ever made, it’s one that achieves the singular feat of scaring you to your soul without monsters or demons. Of course, you could say that it does have one: Anthony Perkins’ stammering, bird-eyed Norman Bates, the nebbish motel clerk who thinks, at certain moments, that he’s his mother — and that she’s the killer inside him. Yet Norman is a monster of warped humanity; he’s a nervous schizoid freak. The booby trap of “Psycho,” the joke of it, and the endlessly rewatchable pleasure and profundity of it is that Norman is one sick puppy, but the...
(CNN)Just before the Covid-19 quarantine, I joined my fellow hosts on Turner Classic Movies for an "Old Hollywood" fashion photo shoot for Emmy Magazine. But when the spread came out, I could not bring myself to post the photos to my social media. As an African American cinema and media studies professor, how could I promote the glamour of classic Hollywood when our current media landscape was exploding with scenes of racial crisis? Jacqueline Stewart Day after day, I scrolled through posts decrying the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. For weeks, video after video showed the escalating protests against police brutality and the brutal treatment of protesters by police. It seemed inappropriate to share shots...
