I’ve written more than once about the handful of years — the first years of our marriage (1989 to 1993) — when my wife and I pretty much spent every summer Friday night at the drive-in movies. Those articles are filled with nostalgia and longing and sentiment and all the other emotions you feel as your past becomes the long past. It’s been almost 30 years since we’ve gone to the drive-in. Thirty. That’s a long time to be away from something you love… Well, that losing streak finally ended two weeks ago … and completely by accident. My wife and I have just returned from a two week camping trip. I didn’t publicize the trip while we were away....
In my nearly fifty years as a resident of Montbello, I've seen a lot of change in Denver Public Schools. As a parent, retired DPS teacher and community member, I'm accustomed to fighting to get what our kids deserve. And now, after serving on the Reimagine the SPF committee, I want the Board of Education to adopt the recommendations we collaboratively developed over the course of nine months. The School Performance Framework or SPF, was supposed to be a way for families to determine if a school offers a quality education. Sadly, the color-coded school report cards were "weaponized" — used by DPS to determine which schools should be closed. In our community, school after school was shut down and...

As it turns out, the badge-free, unidentified men in gas masks prowling Portland’s streets and dragging people into unmarked vans aren’t arresting people at random. They’re arresting people who might do something wrong. In the future. At least, that’s the story that came from never confirmed by the Senate or even actually nominated Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf. In an interview on Fox News, Wolf complained: “Because we don't have that local support, that local law enforcement support, we are having to go out and proactively arrest individuals, and we need to do that because we need to hold them accountable.” Individuals are being “proactively” arrested, to hold them accountable, for … future crimes. Considering that Wolf has previously pushed a list...

The creators of the musical “Super You” are riding a high. It was finally performed in front of a long-awaited live audience, cheering and honking. The pandemic prevented that. But now,...

The secretary of state said it would extend the signature deadline to July 6 to qualify for the fall ballot. But U.S. District Judge Matthew Leitman rejected it. He turned down an earlier proposal to give advocates more time to get signatures and then use them to try to get...

Our feature film, Followed, which I wrote and helped produce, was supposed to open in over 300 traditional theaters across the country weeks ago. COVID-19, however, put the kibosh on that dream. It was to be my first screenplay to see national distribution, too. When I learned our movie would be released in drive-in theaters instead, it felt like another twist of the blade. I wanted, with all my heart, for audiences to experience our film inside the best theaters with optimum sound. Drive-ins, I thought, would be a second-rate, “lesser” experience. But then I realized something important I had long forgotten: I fell in love with movies at a drive-in theater. I was 5 years old. My dad, a...

Today the Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration from ending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program that began in 2012. DACA has helped prevent tens of thousands of U.S. residents from being deported to countries they barely remember. One of them is Alejandro Flores-Muñoz, co-owner of Stokes Poké, a food truck and kiosk specializing in the Hawaiian-style seafood dish. Flores-Muñoz was only seven years old when his parents brought him to the U.S., so for most of his life he's been trapped in a no-man's land as an undocumented resident without the ability to apply for citizenship. As an adult, he was able to apply for DACA status, which provides a form of documented status that allows him...
