Los Angeles Angels rookie right fielder Jo Adell has been in the Major Leagues for less than a week, but already has a signature highlight: a four-base error in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Texas Rangers.   Adell was charged with the rare feat when a routine pop fly bounced out of his glove and flew the few remaining feet over the fence. Nick Solak hoped the original ruling of a home run would stand, but knew right away it hadn't when he saw a Texas hit replaced by a Los Angeles error on the scoreboard two innings later. The official scorer changed what would have been Solak's first homer of the season to an error after consulting with the Elias...

(Photo by Katelyn Mulcahy/Getty Images) The Clippers have the talent to win the 2020 NBA title, but teams looking to knock them off should focus on these three strategies.  Doc Rivers is one coach who certainly didn’t want to see the NBA season suspended. His Clippers were off to a flying 44-20 start which was good for second place in the Western Conference. Make no mistake about it, Los Angeles’ “other team” has legitimate title aspirations this season. The presence of star power on the roster makes...

(CBS Local)– The NBA season gets restarted this week in Orlando, Florida and the Los Angeles Clippers remain on the shortlist of title contenders. The Clips were 44-20 before the season got shutdown due to the spread of COVID-19 and on Thursday, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will get a huge test when they matchup against LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers. CBS Sports NBA writer James Herbert picked the Clippers to win it all at the beginning of the season and he still thinks the Clips are in a prime position to win their first championship in franchise history. “Like every team, I want to see how they play in the bubble. Dwight Howard is still a quality shot blocker. (Photo by John McCoy/Getty Images) Besides a hope or a prayer, here’s how opponents can try to beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 NBA Playoffs. The hours of negotiations, epidemiological presentations, and press conferences were nothing more than whitewater following in the wake of LeBron James’ statement all the way back in the spring that he intended to finish out the 2019-20 NBA season. In the NBA, what James says goes, and he foresees future fallen dominoes better than most players. It didn’t hurt, either, that the Lakers were in prime position to get James back to the Finals for the 10th time. The past several months have been about...

Mookie Betts, Los Angeles Dodgers. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images) Of course, Boston sports radio can’t say nice things about Mookie Betts.Did you honestly think Boston sports talk radio would praise Mookie Betts these days? In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the former AL MVP of the Boston Red Sox has just signed a massive contract to seemingly never play for anyone else outside of the Dodgers for the rest of time. Betts is a big fan of calling Los Angeles home these days. Had he gotten that type of offer in Boston, he probably wouldn’t have signed it because he loves living in Los Angeles. So it’s only fitting that Red Sox chairman Tom Werner said not...
The NBA recently announced that the eight regular-season games played in Orlando will not affect voting for regular season awards. So if either LeBron James or Giannis Antetokounmpo outdo each other in those eight games, it wouldn’t matter. Both have had phenomenal seasons and they have voters in a spot. But Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard has made up his mind about it. While making an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Lillard was asked his opinion on the MVP race. He said, “I don’t think you can go wrong with LeBron or Giannis. But in my opinion, it’s LeBron. Just because they’re the number one seed in the Western Conference. And I feel like he’s had a dominant...
If the crisis continues at its current clip, coronavirus is on track to become the second leading cause of death in Los Angeles County for 2020, public health officials said Wednesday.  So far, 4,213 Angelinos have died of the infection in only about six months.  That makes it likely second only to heart disease for the leading cause of death in the county where about 6,000 people died of cardiac problems in the first six months of 2019, according to County Public Health Director Dr Barbara Ferrer.  The seven-day average for daily coronavirus fatalities in LA county has turned downward since the first week of July, but Ferrer urged residents to stay vigilant and not interpret that pattern with too...

A rural schoolteacher in Northern California whose husband has lung disease. What they have in common: fear. Also anger, confusion and frustration with California’s roller-coaster coronavirus economy — in which workplaces close and open and close again, rules for those that remain open can change by the day, and enforcement often seems lax. Amid soaring infections and hospitalizations, Gov. Gavin Newsom this month again shut down a large swath of businesses across the state, including dine-in restaurants, bars, movie theaters, card rooms, gyms, hair salons and some offices. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Communities of color in many major cities have less access to COVID-19 testing sites than white residents living in wealthier areas in those same cities, according to a new, extensive review of testing sites by ABC-owned television stations and FiveThirtyEight."I welcome the attention by the media and by many well-intentioned organizations to really point the spotlight at it, to push people to ask the hard questions about what's being done," said Dr. Christina Ghaly, the director of Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti warned the city was 'on the brink' of another stay-at-home order and admitted that the economy resumed too quickly as cases continue to spike in the coronavirus hot spot. In the same interview on CNN's State of the Union, Garcetti blasted President Trump for a 'lack of national leadership' and giving 'rants in the Rose Garden' instead of enacting a feasible coronavirus response.  'I think we're on the brink of that,' Garcetti said about a potential second city lockodown.  'I think a lot of people don’t understand, mayors often have no control what opens up and doesn’t — that’s either at a state or county level. And I do agree, that those things happened too quickly.' ...

LOS ANGELES — After a disappointing spring in which kids at home learned far too little, the Los Angeles Unified School District will keep its campuses closed for at least the start of the new school year. The surge in Los Angeles County COVID-19 cases has been too big for the schools to work around, according to Superintendent Austin Beutner. As good as even a partial return to school would have been, for even just the youngest of the students, Beutner worries the county could be headed for another lockdown, which would be the most disruptive outcome of all. He has a point. Los Angeles County isn’t like the countries in Europe that have been reopening schools successfully, with no...

Joe Collins said he decided to challenge Waters for her seat representing California's 43rd District during the 2016 election after he found himself unsatisfied with what Democrats have done for minorities during the course of his life. “There is no secret that the policies of the Democratic Party have destroyed the very fabric of minority communities," Collins, who is black, told the Washington Times. "No economic development, lack of quality jobs, poor education, and Joe Biden’s 1994 crime bill have directly contributed to the demise of our communities." Waters, the...
I’ve spent many afternoons trying to make sense of the infinitely jumbled world of commerce that is the Los Angeles swap meet. It’s mostly clothing, jewelry, electronics and luggage stores, but there’s also baby Jesus statues of every skin tone, oil paintings of Michael Jordan with his arm around Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, replica samurai swords, banh mi and live music. Vendors produce custom T-shirts so rapidly that their slogans read like a screen-printed alternative to the newspaper front page: “Rest in peace Nipsey Hussle,” “RIP Kobe and Gianna,” and the overly optimistic “I survived coronavirus 2020.” These days you’ll see a lot of masks, gloves and face shields. And inevitably, you will turn a corner and find yourself...

As the movement to defund the police has grown, so has violence in the U.S., especially in major cities. Much of the progress made in America’s cities after the tough on crime initiatives of the 1980’s and 1990’s has evaporated in recent months as some pundits and politicians have called to re-evaluate the role of police.
